Undone, Versatile & Effortless

Q&A with style creator, Hayden Hinge
Principal Stylist / Colourist @ Luxe Cutters in Point Cook, VIC

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this style as undone, versatile, and effortless. This style and cut can be worn in many ways such as straight, natural, or styled with an iron.

My favorite thing about this style is that her hair looks natural and undone which was my inspiration! My client gets heaps of wear out of this kind of style.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This is a low maintenance hairstyle that is very easy to wear! Regardless of face shape, this is a style that can be flattering on any type of client. Having some light shaping around the face will frame this hairstyle and give you an uplifting look rather then dragging you down.

Even though this style is a low maintenance look, I always make sure my clients know the importance of regular haircuts to keep your style looking fresh. A good hair regimen with the right shampoos, conditioners, and treatments is also important.

Using a product similar to a texture spray when styling will help your style hold a few days or even a week!

Relaxed, Manageable and Flowy Long Layers

Q&A with style creator, Lauren Derbyshire
Stylist @ Beauty Bar Boutique Salon in Wilmington, NC

How would you describe this look?

These are relaxed, easily managed, and flowy long layers!

My favorite thing about this look is that while it has a definite shape, the cut is also fluid and organic. Instead of cutting high elevation layers, we cut inner layers throughout the entire haircut to give her more effortless movement as opposed to structural layers.

Any advice for someone considering it?

My advice to a client wanting this look (and the great thing about this haircut) is to style her hair exactly how she prefers! This is a look that can air dry beautifully or that can be blown out to perfection, which makes it suitable for most lifestyles.

To air dry, I love moisture and shine creams such as Oribe Super Shine or R+Co High Dive scrunched or twisted into the hair for an airy, touchable finish. To blow dry, I love using a styling cream like Oribe Creme for Style or Imperial and a round brush. Finish with a texture spray such as Oribe Dry Texture Spray at the roots for sexy, voluminous body and wave!

Modern Layers

Q&A with style creator, Katie Bacigalupi
Stylist @ Hector Estrada Salon in San Francisco, CA

How would you describe this look?

This is a classic layered haircut with a modern twist. I added lots of texture to this cut, giving her more movement, taking out weight, and giving body. I also kept the ends somewhat blunt, which gives it the updated, modern feel. I love the softness that the face-framing layers and texture provide.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This is a very versatile cut that works with almost all hair types and face shapes. One thing to consider based on your face shape is where the best place to start the face-framing layers would be. Keep in mind that where the layers start is where the eye will be drawn. This can accentuate a feature you like or minimize one that’s not your favorite.

Styling a cut like this is usually very easy! With all the texture and movement, it’s best to use a product that will play that up. A texturizing spray or lotion is my go-to, and Oribe’s Dry Texture Spray and Matte Waves are my favorites.

Since the styling is easy and looks great a little messy, this cut fits pretty much any lifestyle. It is long enough to go up, looks great styled with a wave, and can also we worn sleek and straight. If you’re bored with your long layers but not ready for a major change, this look is perfect.

Free & Natural

Q&A with style creator, Nathanael Gambino
Stylist / Colorist @ Kasai Hair salon in Manhattan Beach, CA

How would you describe this look?

This look is free and natural hair at its purest. The style is perfect for casual or dressy occasions. It has tons of movement and gives a genuine, inviting, and approachable vibe. The layers are seamlessly formed and broken up with blunt but soft textures. The color is simple and natural to give that beautiful, effortless look.

This look was inspired by my summers spent in southern Italy and Sicily where women barely wear makeup and do little to their hair. Instead, they let the Mediterranean sun and salty air have its full effect on them, bringing out their natural colors and textures. It is lived-in hair that’s still alive, where less is so much more. Real is always more beautiful!

Any advice for someone considering it?

Say hello to easy styling and goodbye to all of those unnecessary products. Work with the hair, not against it. I recommend a simple hair serum or leave-in to tame frizz if needed before natural drying or blow drying with large barrel boar bristle brush.

Then use 1 1/4-inch or 1 1/2-inch barrel curling iron to create some movement, alternating directions with each section while keeping the ends on the straighter side. Spray with a workable (non-stiff) hairspray or dry texture spray, the style should last two to three days or more.

Stunning Length

Stunning Length hairstyleInstagram @daddicait.pro

Q&A with style creator, Lee Chapman
Hairstylist @ Salon 1800 in Chicago, IL

How would you describe this look?

My client hadn’t had her hair cut in quite some time which resulted in flat, limp hair. She also has a natural wave that was weighed down by overgrown layers. She almost always wears her hair down, so the main focus of this cut was to create movement.

We also wanted to cater to her wave pattern when worn naturally. By shortening the top layer, it revealed the texture covered underneath that results in a more uniform wave pattern. We added shorter face-framing in order to open up the face area.

My favorite thing about this look was the versatility that benefited both styles whether it’s blown out straight or diffused/air dried. It created shape and volume, even though her fine, waist-length hair could become heavy easily.

Any advice for someone considering it?

If you are considering this look, it is achievable with a simple round brush blowout. I used a medium-sized brush and about a golfball-sized amount of Bumble and bumble’s Thickening Mousse, focusing on creating volume around the crown area. This mousse has a medium, breakable hold without becoming crunchy or stiff.

I finished this look with MoroccanOil’s Dry Texture Spray to add separation and texture through her mid-lengths and ends. This cut is fitting for most hair types, but works best for fine, wavy, medium to long hair if one is trying to attain more volume and movement.

Bohemian Meets Hippy

Bohemian Meets Hippy hairstyleInstagram @riverthestylist

Q&A with style creator, Sarah Rivers
Hairstylist @ Redbloom Salon in Calgary, AB

How would you describe this look?

This look is a modern take on a bohemian meets hippy style.

The focus on the face-framing layers accentuates her natural features and have a nice, soft flow to them. I love the amount of texture in the hair!

Any advice for someone considering it?

To achieve this look, I would say the longer the hair is, the more face-framing layers you’re going to see! This look is wearable for most hair types, however, I would recommend having medium to thick hair to support the amount of layers. This haircut is most flattering on a square or oval face shape.

To achieve this style, you can either round brush directing hair toward the face, or you can use a flat iron to bevel the hair in. You don’t need a lot of products to style, but using a heat protector or something that’s going to give you a bit of hold or body will help to better achieve this look. This haircut will sit differently on various hair textures and lengths, but is super trendy and fun!

Wearable Beauty

Q&A with style creator, Amy Moffitt
Advanced Stylist @ John James Salon in Crofton, MD

How would you describe this look?

This look is great for any season and is very wearable.

My favorite thing about this look is that it is very natural-looking, but also trendy and sexy. It’s a great look for the office or date night. The style has a lot of diversity and could be worn straight or curly and parted anywhere.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is great for fine hair, but would also work with thicker hair.

To accomplish this style, I used a volumizing texture spray throughout damp hair and a round brush to blow dry. I finished with a 1 1/2-inch curling iron and a flexible finishing spray.

This look would be great for someone with any face shape and also looks beautiful pulled back away from the face.

Long Bronde Layers

Long Bronde Layers hairstyleInstagram @hour.rose.salon

Q&A with style creator, Erin Barr
Owner / Master Stylist @ Hour Rose Salon in Brooklyn, NY

How would you describe this look?

This look is what we call bronde. It’s that perfect balance between brunette and blonde, and is great for that customer that wants to still be more on the brunette side of things, but wants to feather in some lightness.

Any advice for someone considering it?

The most important thing to maintain this color and style are great products at home, especially shampoo and conditioner. We recommend Verb Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner because both are sulfate and paraben-free, as well as color-safe. We also recommend Pravana’s Purple “Blonde” shampoo to use once or twice per week to keep unwanted brassiness away.

This look was styled with a round brush, prepping with Verb Ghost Prep and finishing with Verb Ghost Oil.

This look is also great for the brunette client that wants a low maintenance balayage.

Long Classic Layers

Long Classic Layers hairstyleInstagram @sainasarafian

Q&A with style creator, Saina Sarafian
Stylist & Hair Extension Specialist @ Medulla & Co. in Toronto, ON

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as long, classic layers. My favorite thing about it would have to be that it suits a lot of clients who have long hair and don’t want a one-length cut, but also don’t want too much over layering.

It’s actually quite a universal cut on any mid-length to long-haired person. It’s also quite flattering to most hair textures.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This cut it quite universal meaning that given they have the right length, most women can wear this cut. Depending on the shape of the face, you can alter the layers around the face to create balance. Because the layers are so soft and not overdone, I’d say it suits all face shapes.

This is a classic cut for a reason! It is super easy to manage on a day to day basis and is very low maintenance.

Face-Framing Modern Shag

Face-Framing Modern Shag hairstyleInstagram @elysand

Q&A with style creator, Ely Sanudo
Aveda Stylist @ Salon Blonde in Tucson, AZ

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as a long modern shag. My favorite thing about it is the movement and how you can customize the lengths around the face in order to enhance your client’s best features.

Any advice for someone considering it?

A client should consider the texture and density of their hair when thinking about this cut. It may require a lot of styling for someone with highly textured hair and it may make thin hair look even thinner.

This specific look was styled forward so that it framed the face nicely and then curled with a two-inch Marcel for movement. I used Aveda’s Smooth Infusion Style Prep, Nourishing Styling Creme and Air Control to tame my guest’s hair texture.

Beautiful Face Framing Layers

Q&A with style creator, Deepa Fenn
Managing Director @ Catalyst Salon & Spa in Chenkottukonam, India

How would you describe this look?

These are beautiful loose curls with red and dark gold highlights. My favorite thing about this look is that it is very natural and can be easily maintained. The layers beautifully frame her face and even though they are subtle, the combination of the red and gold highlights really enhances her look.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This kind of face-framing looks good on wavy hair textures. I recommend a color-protecting shampoo and conditioner like Vitamino from L’Oréal, as well as a full volume mousse. Finish this look with Liss Unlimited Serum for shine and a setting spray like Elnett Satin Hairspray.

These face-framing layers look great on square shaped faces, but is a look that can be easily maintained by anyone.

Brigitte Bardot-Inspired

Brigitte Bardot-Inspired hairstyleInstagram @luis_valdezhmua

Q&A with style creator, Luis Valdez
Hairstylist / Makeup Artist @ Salon Salome in Chicago, IL

How would you describe this look?

This look is best described as a sultry, sexy shape for women with longer hair that love volume and movement without having to sacrifice their length. Think very Brigitte Bardot with a lot of wispy layers and a long, wispy fringe that blends into face-framing layers. These layers allow for a lot of volume and softness around the face.

This look is extremely versatile in the sense that the cut can be worn to any side that the client decides to part that day. Personally, I love the fringe of this haircut because it’s the kind of style in which the rest of the hair can be pulled back and up and it still looks styled.

Any advice for someone considering it?

For anyone thinking of going for a look like this, I highly recommend being able to work with a round brush and blow dryer because of the fringe area. Beyond that, a 1 1/4-inch curling iron will work for the whole head. The beauty behind creating this sort of tousled look is that it doesn’t take much work at all. If you work in large sections, the look can be done very quickly.

After curling and cooling, I like to spray either a very light hold hairspray or dry texture spray (like IGK’s Down ‘n Out Dirty Spray) while you shaking out the waves and raking through the hair with your hands.

This is an extremely versatile look that can fit most face shapes. This may not be the best look for someone with a shorter face shape because of the shorter fringe. I would just make sure to leave the fringe a little longer in that case. Also, the haircut itself requires the hair to be fairly texturized to allow for volume to happen without having to take the layers in the haircut very short.

Fashionable Yet Effortless

Fashionable Yet Effortless hairstyleInstagram @bobbytomypin

Q&A with style creator, Abbi Blanton
Hairstylist @ Village Solo in Denver, CO

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

Looking at this picture three words come to mind: fashionable, effortless and achievable. I find it helpful to look at pictures where a guest has no fringe and another picture where that same guest has fringe. Which one feels more fashion forward? Most of us would gravitate toward the fringe-wearing beauty.

This certain cut and style feels fashionable yet effortless, which is very important for the rise of the millennials who cringe at the word commitment. As a stylist I try to make sure the client can wear their hair in its natural state, therefore making is as effortless as possible. This specific guest has naturally wavy hair and mostly lets it air dry. As I cut, I make sure her hairs natural state is achievable, effortless and fashionable. Yes, it may have taken me 45 minutes to round brush her hair, but all she really has to do is scrunch in some curl cream from Verb through her ends and let it be free!

As for the fringe, grab a blow dryer and 30 seconds later you’re styled and ready to go. I strive for these three words every time a guests sits in my chair.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

Verb, Verb and Verb. For this style specifically, I recommend the Verb Styling Creme to put in the hair while it’s still wet before you blow dry it to help smooth and add memory as well as longevity. Once you finish the blow dry, run a pump of Verb Ghost Oil through the ends to add shine and protection.

Do you want to know the best thing about this product line? EVERYTHING IS A WHOPPING $14. Talk about fashionable, effortless and achievable!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

The ideal candidate for this hairstyle would be a gal with wavy, dense, finer textured hair. It is perfect for the guest whose main concerns are low maintenance, little to no heat, and keeping up with the trends. Having this long layered haircut would allow you to air dry and run out the door, knowing that your cut will frame your face and accent your wave just right.

I adore this look on my guest and believe it does a great job to frame her long, square shaped face. That being said, I am a firm believer that no matter the face, we can tailor any style/haircut so it best suits you.

Long Layered Textured Cut

Q&A with style creator, Jackie Heredia
Master Stylist @ Sweeter Than Honey Hair Lounge in Costa Mesa, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I describe this look as a long layered textured cut! I love the versatility in styling this look. I am able to achieve both smooth or wavy looks with the way that it is cut and the growout is great.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

When the hair is damp, I always use a leave-in/heat protectant before blow drying. My all time favorite is Davines Oi Milk Spray. I then spray a texture/volumizing spray (Evo Mister is fantastic) or even a beach spray to blow dry.

For the waves, I use a flat iron to curl while leaving ends out for the beachy look. I finish with dry shampoo or spray wax like Evo She Bang a Bang or Evo Water Killer.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

The best thing about this look is that it works well on most clients. It is ideal for those who already have somewhat wavy hair and want light layering, but don’t want to have to work too much to style their hair. It is also perfect for someone looking for versatility.

Blended Layers

Q&A with style creator, Jenna Olish
Student Sytlist @ Toni&Guy in Los Angeles, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a great look for someone who wants texture and movement. Depending on how short you cut the layers, this look can be dramatic or subtle.

The best thing about this style is the way the layers blend. You can add layers to the hair without it looking too blunt and shelfy.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

The products I recommend are Beach Freak (an anti-frizz product spray), Small Talk (a volumizing cream), and just a touch of Superstar (spray mousse). These products are all made by Tigi.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This style is perfect for all hair types with mid-length to long hair. It’s a great look for someone with an oval or heart shaped face. As for the style, this look goes beautifully with wavy or straight hair.
