2011 Fall Hairstyles for Long Hair
By Irene Bredthauer

“Whether you have always had long hair or have been patiently been growing it out, long hair gives you tons of styling options! Straight and sleek or wavy and curly, be inspired to try new things with your tresses. Show off your long hair by wearing it down or wearing it partially up is super cute, too. No matter how you choose to display these fall trends, you’re sure to grab lots of amazing attention.
How To Style: If you have coarser hair, start by blow-drying hair smooth and tame as much frizz as you can. Take 3” by 3” sections of hair and curl with a 1 ½” curling iron. From your ears down curl the entire section, roots to ends. When you get above the ear, take sections and only curl from the middle of the section to the tips. After you have curled your entire head spray with flexible hold hairspray and run your fingers through to break up any ringlets. Beautiful!
Recommended Hair Products: I love Redken’s Glass for a serum before and after curling and Kérastase Double Force for flexible hold.
Romantic Rocker
Simple large curls take a sleek look up to a whole new level!
Best Face Shape and Hair Type:
Bangs like this look best on oval faces. The large loose waves look great on anyone!
Tip: Tease the crown area for a more retro vibe.
How To Style: Start by blow dry your hair with a paddle brush or a round brush. The goal is to smooth out the hair cuticle as much as possible while blow drying to make it easier when you go in with a flat iron. After hair is completely dry, drop out a thin bottom section of hair and secure the rest up with a clip (or a ponytail works great, too!). Flat iron the section you left out from roots to ends. Then drop out another thin section and repeat until all of your hair is sleek and straight.
Recommended Hair Products: Use a nice moisturizing leave-in conditioner on wet hair before you blow dry. Try Kérastase Nectar Thermique. Moisture helps minimize frizz. Also use a smoothing serum while wet and then run another small amount of serum through hair while dry before going in with the flat iron. Try Kérastase Oleo Relax Serum. You’ll have amazing shine in no time!
Sleek Sophistication
This super straight style is the best way to show off how long your hair is! Flat ironing smoothes out frizz and adds amazing shine and softness. You’ll want to touch your hair all day long.
Best Face Shape and Hair Type:
Straight and sleek hair looks great on all face shapes and hair textures. However, the more coarse, curly, frizzy, your hair naturally is, the harder it will be to create this straight look so really work the products and the blow dry to help when flat ironing.
Tip: Always apply a heat protectant before you use any hot tools to help keep your hair from getting dried out. Serums are great heat protectors. Stray away from any products with a sticky or tacky feel because you want your hair to be soft and smooth, not crunchy.
How To Style: For this fun style you will need a 1” – 1 ½ “ curling iron. Comb a small amount of serum through your hair to protect your hair from the heat and then spritz hair with a medium to firm hairspray and comb through your hair to break up the product. Start by dropping out a small bottom section and secure the rest of your hair up so it’s easier to work with. Grab about a 1” by 1” piece of hair and curl. Continue this process for the rest of the bottom section and continue dropping out more sections to curl until you have curled your entire head of hair except the bangs. Use a flat iron for the bangs and flip the ends of the bangs back to blend in the curls.
Recommended Hair Products: For protecting your hair from heat and for shine use Redken’s Glass and for hold use a nice controlled product like Garnier Fructis Extreme Control Anti-Humidity Hairspray.
Amazing Curls
Big voluminous curls are a girl’s best friend! This style adds instant playfulness and sophistication.
Best Face Shape and Hair Type:
This style looks great on all face shapes and works best with fine to medium textured hair. Coarse hair will just take a bit more time to tame.
Tip: You can also achieve this look with 1” or slightly larger curlers or hot rollers. You will have soft waves the next day so you may not even have to do a touch up or try a nice side ponytail on day two.
How To Style: These curls are soft and wavy so use a 1 ½” barreled curling iron or larger. Start by dropping out a small bottom section and secure the rest of your hair up so it’s easier to work with. Grab about a 1” by 1” piece of hair and curl. Your sections don’t have to be perfect since you are going to comb out later. Continue this process for the rest of the bottom section and continue dropping out more sections to curl until you have curled your entire head of hair. Spritz some shine spray over your entire head and then brush through with a paddle brush to break up and loosen up the curls. Grab two small sections of hair by your part line and secure with a bobby pin. You can pull a veil of hair over the bobby pin to camouflage if you want to hide the pin. Then spray with a hairspray if you desire.
Recommended Hair Products: Privé Shine Spray works great to add softness and shine. Apply serum before you and after you use the curling iron.
Seductive Waves
Long sleek waves make this style look effortless. Pinning the hair back keeps hair up and out of your face for a nice polished appearance.
Best Face Shape and Hair Type:
These sexy waves look great on all faces shapes and works best on fine to medium textured hair.
Tip: Use bobby pins that match your hair tone. They come in every color and the closer they match your shade the more they will blend in.
How To Style: Flat iron your entire head of hair and flip bangs back to one side with a slight flip on the ends to soften them. Now, section out the top crown area of your head and then take a thin horizontal section from the back and hold up. Taking a small-toothed comb, tease your hair into your scalp to create a cushion. Then take another thin section and repeat moving forward, stopping when you reach the start of your bangs. Using a paddle brush or bristle brush lightly smooth the top layer of hair back and over the cushion you created. Grab this entire section and secure into a ponytail just short of being right on top of your head. Secure without crushing your teasing. Then take another section of hair from ear to ear (see photo for help) pull back tightly and create a second ponytail. You should have two ponytails on top of each other. Grab the hair that is hanging from both ponytails and twist them together to form the poof and then secure into one ponytail. Keep adding hair ties to the remaining ponytail hair about every inch and a half or so. Spray with medium hold hairspray and you’re done!
Recommended Hair Products: For this style start with a serum like Moroccan Oil to smooth hair and to help make it shine. Then use a medium to firm hold hairspray like Garnier Fructis Extreme Control Anti-Humidity Hairspray to take any flyaways.
Tomboy Twist
Not all girls with long hair like to wear it down and curly all the time. Try this edgy modern style that’s cool and different without being crazy.
Best Face Shape and Hair Type:
This mini updo would look flattering on most face shapes. This style could be done with any hair type and would look super cute curly, too.
How To Style: If you have coarser hair, start by blow-drying hair smooth and tame as much frizz as you can. Take 1” by 1” or slightly larger sections of hair and curl with a ½” curling iron. Take sections and only curl from the middle of the hair shaft to the tips. When you do the last section, start curling from about 3” - 4” away from the roots to create that sleek look on top. After you have curled your entire head spray with flexible hold hairspray and run your fingers through to break up any ringlets. This creates a beautiful messy look.
Recommended Hair Products: Use Kérastase Oleo Relax Serum before and after curling. It’s anti-humidity quality is fabulous for curls.
Romantic Ringlets
Play these soft messy curls up or down depending on how you dress. This style takes a little work but when properly executed looks effortlessly chic.
Best Face Shape and Hair Type:
Works great on all face shapes but really amazing on heart shaped faces because the curls really fill the bottom area in.
Tip: Spray with a light curling spray and scrunch midday to refresh curls.
How To Style: For this tight-curled style you will need a 1“ or slightly smaller curling iron. Start by dropping out a small bottom section and secure the rest of your hair up so it’s easier to work with. I like to put it up in a ponytail. Grab about a 1” by 1” piece of hair from your bottom section, spray with hairspray and curl from roots to ends. Continue this process for the rest of the bottom section and continue dropping out more sections to curl until you have curled your entire head of hair except the bangs. Use a flat iron for the bangs and flip the ends of the bangs back to blend in the curls.
Recommended Hair Products: I suggest using Kérastase Double Force Hair Spray because it curls well but also has hold. When you are done use a stronger hold hairspray like BigSexyHair’s Spray and Play Harder Firm Volumizing Hair Spray.
Seriously Chic
Smaller sized curls make this a more sassy style. The sleek bangs pull the whole look together for a sweetly polished / non-disheveled look.
Best Face Shape and Hair Type:
Works great on all face shapes and hair types. Curls help soften all face shapes and look quite flattering.
Tip: Because the curls are tighter, they will loosen up overnight and you will have another nice style in the morning!
How To Style: This style requires a 1” – 1 ½ “ curling iron. Start by dropping out a small bottom section and secure the rest of your hair up. Grab 3” by 3” pieces of hair and curl loosely. Continue this process for the rest of the bottom section and continue dropping out more sections to curl until you have curled your entire head. Now, section out the top crown area of your head and then take a thin horizontal section from the back and hold up. Taking a small-toothed comb, tease your hair into your scalp to create a cushion. Then take another thin section and repeat moving forward until your reach your front hairline. Using a paddle brush or bristle brush lightly smooth the top layer of hair back and over the cushion you created. Use your fingers and smooth any curls that were handled for a refreshed finish. Then spray with hairspray.
Recommended Hair Products: You will need lots of hold for this look. Try BigSexyHair Spray and Play Volumizing Hair Spray or Aussie Mega Hair Spray.
Modern Retro Vibe
This is a more modern take on a retro pinup style. It works perfectly for gals who want all their hair out of their face but still want their hair down.
Best Face Shape and Hair Type:
This big-volumed hairstyle looks great on oval, square, and heart shaped faces. Works best with long to no bangs, and longer layers.
Tip: Carry a comb and some hairspray in your purse for touch ups throughout the day. You never know when you may run into someone stellar!
Using a paddle brush or bristle brush lightly smooth the top layer of hair back and over the cushion you created. Use your fingers and smooth any curls that were handled for a refreshed finish. Then spray with hairspray.
Recommended Hair Products: For this type of look you for sure want lots of hold! Try BigSexyHair Spray and Play Volumizing Hair Spray or Aussie Mega Hair Spray.
Curly Bombshell
This fun pin up style is created with curls and lots of teasing. If you want volume then this is the look for you.
Best Face Shape and Hair Type:
Not the best for round face shapes but great for any hair type. Fine hair works but if your hair is very thin it may be hard to create as much volume that is shown in the photo.
Tip: Accessorize! Try a leopard print headband for a pin up look or cute barrettes can really play up this huge hair statement.
How To Style: Flat iron your bangs forward in small sections to add shine and to defrizz. For the rest of this style you will need a 1“ sized barrel curling iron. You can use one slightly larger or smaller, too. Start by dropping out a small bottom section and secure the rest of your hair up. Grab about a 1” by 1” piece of hair from your bottom section, spray with hairspray and curl from roots to ends. Continue this process for the rest of the bottom section and continue dropping out more sections to curl until you have curled your entire head of hair except the bangs. Spray all the curls again with the hairspray and use your hand to scrunch them up to help add texture.
Recommended Hair Products: Run some serum through your hair before you start to protect the hair shaft from heat. Try Redken Glass. Try Davines Hairspray for great hold and texture.
Softness with an Edge
If you have straight bangs cut with a razor like this chances are you most likely flat iron your hair for a more rocker look. But adding tight curls with these same bangs gives a totally awesome effect.
Best Face Shape and Hair Type:
Works great on all face shapes and hair types. If you have naturally curly hair, just flat iron the bangs and diffuse your hair with mousse when you get out of the shower.
Tip: The bangs shown in this photo are choppy and textured at the tips but would also look amazing with straight blunt bangs. Very sleek!
How To Style: Get ready for small curling iron fun! Start by dropping out a small bottom section and secure the rest of your hair up so it’s easier to work with. Grab about a 1” by 1” piece of hair, spritz with a light hold hair spray, and then curl with a 1” or less sized barrel curling iron. Continue this process for the rest of the bottom section and continue dropping out more sections to curl until you have curled your entire head of hair except the bangs. Use a flat iron for the bangs and flip the ends of the bangs back to blend in the curls.
Recommended Hair Products: Run some serum through your hair before you start to protect the hair shaft from heat. Try Redken Glass. Use a hairspray with light hold; if it’s too sticky it may be more difficult to use the curling iron. Try Kérastase’s Double Force Hair Spray, it’s great for damaged hair, too.
Mermaid Waves
These smaller curls look sweet and beachy or could also help add a vintage look to your style. Have fun and accessorize to make this style pop!
Best Face Shape and Hair Type:
This style is great to add volume and bounce to fine to medium textured hair. These smaller curls do add a lot of width so round face shapes should try softer, longer curls.
Tip: This look could be even more vintage by curling the bangs. Or try switching up the part for whole different feel.
How To Style: Since the curls are nice and loose this style is fun and easy to do. Instead of taking small pieces of hair into the curling iron, take big sections of hair and wrap them around a 1” or larger curling iron. Release each section from the iron and spray with light to medium hold hairspray.
Recommended Hair Products: Use a light to medium hold hairspray after curling each section to help keep these pretty waves.
Soft and Sexy Waves
If you have naturally straight, limp hair, and don’t want to spend a lot of time adding oomph and body then this style is for you! Try these soft waves with side swept bangs today.
Best Face Shape and Hair Type:
This sexy style works great on all face shapes so get your sassy stilettos out! Loose curls are most likely to droop so fine haired girls will have the biggest challenge with this look. Use a stronger hairspray if you have limp, fine hair to help make this style last.
Tip: You can also achieve this look with 2” curlers or hot rollers. Instant va-va-voom!
How To Style: The trick to this style is to take small sections with a very small spiral curling iron. It will take a bit longer to do but your efforts will be so worth it! Drop down a section of hair and pin the rest up with clips or a hair tie. Take small 1” by 1” sections and curl with a small barrel curling iron. After each section is curled, spray with medium to firm hold hair spray. Try not to touch your curls after you are done as you could create frizz. For a longer smoother bang style, only curl the bottom piece of hair when you reach that top section. Spray entire head with hairspray when you are done and go out on the town!
Recommended Hair Products: Medium to firm hold hairsprays work best with this style. Tight curls can loosen up throughout the day so make it last by using strong hold spray after you curl each piece to make it last.
Renaissance Mane
Tight romantic curls add interest and texture to this beautiful, long-haired look.
Best Face Shape and Hair Type:
Looks lovely on all face shapes and works great with all hair textures. In this particular picture the hair is all one length with no layers
Tip: Tight curls loosen up overnight and give you a totally new look the next day! Makes all the work you spent curling it – worth it.
How To Style: The hardest part about this style is blow-drying it smooth. But after you do that, just curl the ends of large sections to emphasize your layers and you’re done! Use a large round brush while blow-drying sections of hair to make it lay frizz free and smooth.
Recommended Hair Products: While you are blow-drying use some mousse or a foam such as Privé Foaming Styler or Pureoloy Root Lift to help defrizz your hair. Also use a serum like Kérastase’s Oleo Relax Serum or shine spray like Pureology’s Glossing Mist for a mirror like finish.
Classy Flip
Make your long hair look stunning with this totally classic look of silky smooth hair with subtle flips at the ends of your layers.
Best Face Shape and Hair Type:
Looks beautiful on all face shapes and works best with short to medium layered hair.
Tip: Try this same style with a center part for another stunning look. Save time by just curling the front pieces of your hair when you’re in a rush.
How To Style: In this particular picture, hair is blow-dried smooth and curled just on the ends to add wavy texture. Be creative and curl your entire head if you would like for more drama. After styling your hair the way you like, loosely pull all of the hair to one side of your head, just below your ear. Secure with a clear hair tie or any color hair tie of your choice. If you need to, smooth your bangs again with a flat iron or curling iron.
Recommended Hair Products: Use a serum before applying heat. Try Redken’s Glass for a shiny finish. Use a hairspray for bangs and the top of your hair to help tame frizz or flyaways such as Garnier Fructis Extreme Control Anti-Humidity Hairspray.
Side Superstar Ponytail
Create an elegant side swept style with this low, side-sitting ponytail.
Best Face Shape and Hair Type:
Looks best on heart shaped and round face shapes and works fabulously with all hair types - curly, straight, or wavy.
Tip: Tease the crown area of your head for more volume and a more retro sixties vibe. Or add a fun flower for a sweet beachy look.
How To Style: Drop out a thin bottom section of hair and secure the rest up with a clip or a hair tie. Flat iron the section you left out from roots to ends. Then drop out another thin section and repeat until all of your hair is sleek and straight. Keep the flat iron straight and then bevel the flat iron under at the tips of the hair slightly to flip them under.
Recommended Hair Products: Use a serum or a shine spray like Pureology’s Glossing Mist to pump up the shine! Apply to hair before flat ironing.
Straight Supermodel
This style may be straight and simple but is high on the drama! When you have beautiful long hair you don’t need to do much to be a star.
Best Face Shape and Hair Type:
Shiny sleek hair looks wonderful on all face shapes and hair types. The more coarse, curly, frizzy, your hair naturally is, the harder it will be to create this straight look. Try blow-drying your hair first to smooth it out as much as possible before you go in and flat iron.
Tip: This classic look is amazing wherever you go. At work or out on the town you are sure to be a stunning head-turner!
Having long hair is really fun so get inspired and use different tools for different looks. If you usually wear it long and straight, mix it up by grabbing a curling iron for ringlets or waves. Consider using a couple of pins or barrettes to get bangs or hair up and out of your face but still accentuating your long hair.
Be the trendsetter this fall by trying one of these great looks!
