A Guide to the Hottest Long Hairstyles for Fall 2014

Fall is such a beautiful time of the year. Depending on where you live, the weather and scenery start to change and, additionally, new hairstyles come and go.

This gives you plenty of opportunity to test out a new look or revisit something that you haven’t tried in a while. Take a look at some of our favorite Fall 2014 styling options for you long haired ladies!

1. Babe with a Beanie

If this look doesn’t scream “fall”, then I don’t know what does! A cute headpiece to match your outfit is the perfect add-on to your long fall hair.

Long Hairstyles for Fall

How To Style:

  1. Part hair as desired, then use a 1¼-inch curling iron to curl sections of your hair.
  2. After everything is curled, use a brush to brush through the curls to make them appear softer.
  3. Spray everything with a light hold finishing spray.
  4. Secure a beanie using bobby pins if needed.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

If you have long hair that is ready to be washed but you don’t necessarily have the time to do it, this is great way to disguise those dirty strands! This look is totally versatile and really any hair texture will work. The long, soft curls around your face will make it appear slender and beautiful.

Recommended Products:

Applying a heat protectant to wet hair before you curl your hair is always a good idea. I love Damage Manager by Kevin Murphy. You can’t overuse this stuff. When your hair is wet, spray it everywhere!

2. Radically Round Brushed

A good, round brushed look never goes out of style, no matter what season it is! This casual look is also a great way to show off your layered haircut or fresh fall color.

Long Layered Haircut with FlipsLong Layered Haircut with Flips Side

How To Style:

  1. Spray wet hair with a heat protectant spray and a root boosting spray.
  2. Begin drying your hair using a flat paddle brush.
  3. When your hair is 80% dry, use a boar bristle brush to dry sections of your hair. Be sure to over-direct your hair to gain body and bounce.
  4. Spray everything with a light hold finishing spray.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This look is absolutely perfect for you if you have long hair that’s fine to medium with a minimal natural wave. This look will flatter any face shape.

Recommended Products:

Round brushing is a million times easier if you have the proper brush. I love boar bristle brushes because they create tension and give a TON of shine! Try an Ibiza round brush. They are fabulous!

3. A Foxy Fishtail

Braids continue to be all the rage this fall season, and this sassy fishtail is no exception!

Blonde Fishtail BraidBlonde Fishtail Braid Back

How To Style:

  1. Back comb dry hair to get body at the roots.
  2. Gather hair to one side and then split it into two sections. Begin your fishtail braid.
  3. If you’ve never done a fishtail braid, look on YouTube for a tutorial video. It’s must easier to learn by watching someone do it as opposed to trying to read how to do it!
  4. Secure your braid with a ponytail holder and then spray everything with a light hold finishing spray.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This look is fabulous if you have thick hair that you want to keep out of your face without compromising your style. A round face shape will be flattered by this look because it will make your face seem slim.

Recommended Products:

I completely adore using dry shampoo when back combing to get added body. Try Fresh Hair by Kevin Murphy. It smells lovely and won’t leave a ton of residue!

Tip:

Give yourself a break when learning to create a fishtail braid. It may take a few tries before you get it perfect!

4. Fabulous With A Little Fringe

Bangs are such a perfect way to highlight all your best features and draw attention to your beautiful face this fall season.

Straight Hairstyle with Bangs

How To Style:

  1. Start by blow drying wet hair and then, if needed or desired, flat iron your bangs.
  2. Blow dry the rest of your hair until it is smooth. If needed, use a flat iron to smooth it out even further.
  3. Apply a smoothing oil or serum to the ends of your hair to add shine and softness.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

Bangs are great for any hair texture, but they will be easier to style on fine to medium hair that’s straight. If you want to hide a long forehead or soften asymmetrical brows, bangs are a great option for you.

Recommended Products:

To add extra shine to your bangs, apply a serum to them after they are dry. I like BioSilk, but be sure to keep this product off of your roots and use it sparingly!

5. Beachy and Bohemian

Just because summer is over doesn’t mean you have to ditch the laid back “beachy” look. Long hair ALWAYS loves beach style!

Blonde Beachy Hairstyle with CurlsBlonde Beachy Hairstyle with Curls Side

How To Style:

  1. Part your hair as desired. Then, use a 1-inch curling iron to curl dry hair.
  2. Gather the hair above one of your ears and tightly pull it back. Secure this section back with a bobby pin. Make an effort to pin it back far enough so that the bobby pin can be hidden under the hair on the back of your head.
  3. Once all hair is curled, use your hands to gently break up your curls.
  4. Spray everything with a light hold finishing spray. You can also apply some shine spray to your ends for a little extra oomph!

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

A look like this is so versatile and the one side pulled back gives you a little something extra for an otherwise relaxed look. If you have a layered haircut and your hair is medium to fine, this look is perfect for you! Any face shape will be complemented by this style.

Recommended Products:

If your hair is fine and doesn’t hold curl well, be sure to spray each section before you curl it with a working spray. I love Spray de Mode by Bumble and Bumble. It’s light and won’t get sticky!

6. Magically Middle Parted

Your long hair can be shown off even more this fall season with a trendy middle part.

Long Straight Hairstyle with Middle PartLong Straight Hairstyle with Middle Part Back

How To Style:

  1. Begin by parting hair down the middle using a regular or a rat tail comb.
  2. Use a round brush to blow dry your hair and make it smooth.
  3. If you desire a straighter look, use your flat iron to straighten it even further.
  4. Apply a shine spray to your ends for added sheen.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

You can style hair of any texture and type into a beautiful middle parted look. Wavy or curly hair will require a bit more work to get it to the super sleek finish shown in the photo above. A round face will be complemented by this look.

Recommended Products:

In step 4, I mention a shine serum or spray. I love Shimmer Shine by Kevin Murphy. It will help to keep the frizz down and add a beautiful sheen! Spray a little bit in your hands and then apply it to your ends, taking care to keep it away from your roots.

7. The Beautifully Braided Headband

A braid around your face can make an otherwise standard low side pony stand out a bit!

Low Side Pony with Braided Headband

How To Style:

  1. Section out your bangs and clip them out of the way.
  2. Gather a section of hair behind your bangs and begin your braid.
  3. When the braid reaches behind your ear, secure it back using a bobby pin.
  4. Curl the hair that isn’t in the braid.
  5. Gather sections of hair and pin them around the bottom of the braid using a bobby pin.
  6. Remove your bangs that were clipped back and style them as desired. If you like the look shown here, secure the ends right under the braid using a bobby pin.
  7. Spray everything with a light hold finishing spray.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This look is perfect if you have a lot of thick, long hair. Keep in mind that the braid will look fuller if you have a lot of thick hair to work with. This look will soften square features.

Recommended Products:

If your hair is extra clean, you may want to spray it with a tiny bit of working spray to make it easier to braid. I love Super Clean Spray by Paul Mitchell.

8. Extra Big and Bouncy

There are few things I love more than big, sexy, long hair. You can’t go wrong with this look for fall!

Long Sexy Curly HairstyleLong Sexy Curly Hairstyle Side

How To Style:

  1. If you have naturally curly hair, use a diffuser and dry your hair.
  2. If you don’t have naturally curly hair, use a 1-inch curling iron to curl small sections of dry hair.
  3. When all hair is curled, use a brush to break up the curls. Use your fingers to “fluff” your hair and gain additional body at the roots.
  4. If you want even more body and volume, use a back combing brush to back comb the hair at your roots.
  5. Use hairspray to hold your style in place.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

If you have naturally curly hair, a look like this is a no-brainer! If you have thick hair that’s straight to wavy, this is also a great option for you. A narrow face is ideal for this style. Also, this look will be easiest to complete if you have a haircut with layers.

Recommended Products:

If you have natural curls, a good curl product is essential to getting big, sexy hair. I absolutely love Sculpting Foam by Paul Mitchell mixed with Super Skinny Serum by Paul Mitchell. It’s a combination that will add bounce to your curls, but keep them smooth and soft as well.

9. Subtle and Soft Waves

Soft waves are absolutely all the rage this season. This style looks much more complicated to create than it actually is! Try it for your next night out with friends.

Long Hairstyle with Soft WavesLong Hairstyle with Soft Waves Side

How To Style:

  1. Begin curling your dry hair using a 1-inch curling iron. Be sure that all the curls follow the same pattern, meaning that they are all curled the same way. Each section should be curled so it is going towards your face.
  2. After all of your hair has been curled, use a paddle brush and brush through your curls to soften them. Use the brush and your fingers to form a defined curl pattern.
  3. Spray everything with a light hold finishing hairspray and add a shine serum to your hair from mid shaft to ends.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

Fine to medium texture hair is ideal for this look. An oval face shape will be complemented by this style. Longer layers will work perfectly with this softly curled style.

Recommended Products:

Before you curl each section give it a spritz of Spray de Mode by Bumble and Bumble. It will offer you a little hold without being too crunchy or sticky!

10. Side Pony Sweetness

A side ponytail is a great option for getting your long hair out of your face without compromising on style!

Side Ponytail HairstyleSide Ponytail Hairstyle Side View

How To Style:

  1. Begin with smooth, dry hair that is parted as desired.
  2. Gather you hair into a side ponytail and secure it with a ponytail holder.
  3. Use a piece of hair from the ponytail to wrap around the ponytail holder. Secure the end with a bobby pin or tuck it into the ponytail holder.
  4. If you want, curl the hair in the ponytail using a 1¼-inch curling iron.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This style is a perfect match for you if you have thick hair that you want to keep out of your face. You can really show off your long swoopy bangs with this style. If you have a heart or oval shaped face, you will look fabulous rocking this side pony!

Recommended Products:

If you want to smooth your ponytail out a bit, spray a bit of working spray in your hair before you secure it back. Try Super Clean Spray by Paul Mitchell.

11. A Funky Fishtail

Here’s another take on the fishtail. It’s not so “traditional”, so if you want to add a bit of flair to your long look, give this style a shot!

Long Blonde Hairstyle with Fishtail Braid

How To Style:

  1. Gather half of your hair in back into a low half ponytail. Secure it back using bobby pins.
  2. Gather a section of hair that isn’t in the ponytail and create a fishtail braid. If you have never created a fishtail braid, don’t worry! The easiest way to learn how to do it is to watch a YouTube video. Secure the end of the braid using a clear hair tie.
  3. If you like the look seen above, curl the rest of the hair that isn’t in the braid using a 1¼-inch curling iron.
  4. Spray everything with a light hold finishing spray.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This look is perfectly suited for those with a lot of hair. If you don’t quite have enough hair to complete this look, use a clip-in extension or two! A round face will appear thinner with this style.

Recommended Products:

I am crazy about Air Control Hairspray by Aveda. It’s super light and has a pleasant aroma! Spray a bit on your look after you’ve finished styling for a hold that will last all night.

12. Fresh and Funky

Here is an interesting take on longish hair. Keep your top layers extra short and leave some length around your face to create a unique and trendy look this fall!

Long Hairstyle with Short Top LayersLong Hairstyle with Short Top Layers Side

How To Style:

  1. Use a flat paddle brush to dry your hair so it’s smooth and straight. If you desire an even smoother look, use a flat iron after drying.
  2. Use a 1¼-inch curling iron to curl the ends of your hair.
  3. Apply a smoothing serum to the ends of your hair.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

You will find that this look is easiest to create if you have straight hair. Ask your stylist for a lot of short layers on the top of your head if you want this style. A oval shaped face will be complemented by this style.

Recommended Products:

I love Bumble and Bumble Shine Spray for adding a just that little bit of sheen. Spray a little bit in your hands and then apply it to the ends of your hair.

13. Casually Curled

Long hair plus loosely tousled curls are a recipe for success this fall season! This look is casual, but it translates to a fun date night out as well.

Long Hair with Loose Curls

How To Style:

  1. On dry hair, use a 1¼-inch curling iron to curl large sections of your hair.
  2. Once all sections are curled, use a brush or your fingers to loosen up the curls and make them appear more natural and softer.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This look is absolute magic for anyone who has a lot of thick hair and wants a style that will last a day or two. Also, this look gets better the more lived-in it is! Curl your hair in the morning for it to look absolutely divine by the time the evening rolls around. Any face shape will be complemented by this look.

Recommended Products:

To give your locks a bit more texture, add some wax or texturizing cream to the ends. I love Brilliantine by Bumble and Bumble. For even more definition, try Styling Wax by Bumble and Bumble. Remember to use these products sparingly!

14. Side Braided Perfection

Creating a French braid on one side of your head is a great way to show off fun accessories or some fancy makeup this season.

Long Hairstyle with Side French BraidLong Hairstyle with Side French Braid Side View

How To Style:

  1. Begin with dry, smooth hair that’s parted as desired.
  2. French braid the hair on one side of the part so that it begins at your hairline and ends at the nape of your neck on the opposite side.
  3. Secure the end of the braid with a bobby pin or two. Be sure to hide the bobby pins underneath the straight hair.
  4. Spray everything with a strong hold hairspray.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

Thick hair that is coarse will hold well when braided. A round face shape will be flattered by this look.

Recommended Products:

Creating a braid like this is easier if your hair is a little bit dirty. However, if you just washed your hair and want to try this look, spray everything with a bit of working spray before you get started. I love Spray de Mode by Bumble and Bumble.

15. Adorably Adorned

An extra hair adornment can be the perfect accessory to a fabulous fall look!

Long Wavy Hairstyle with Accessory

How To Style:

  1. Use a 1-inch curling iron on dry hair.
  2. When all sections are curled, add a flower or headband to your style. Secure it with bobby pins if needed.
  3. Spray everything with a light hold finishing spray.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This look is totally swoon-worthy no matter what texture your hair is! An oval or heart shaped face will be complemented by this look.

Recommended Products:

There are plenty of amazing accessories at your nearest beauty supply store. Or, get creative! A fresh flower could be a fun addition to your already glam look.

16. Bohemian and Braided

This look is a fun take on the otherwise ordinary fall braid. It allows you to keep plenty of hair framing your face, but create some interest with a fun braid.

Long Hairstyle with Fun Braid

How To Style:

  1. Begin with dry hair parted down the middle.
  2. Gather a section of hair that falls around your face and braid it. Secure the ends with a clear ponytail holder. Repeat this on the other side.
  3. If your hair is naturally straight and you want a wavier look, grab a 1¼-inch curling iron and curl the hair that isn’t braided. Run your fingers through the curls so they look softer and more natural.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This is a versatile style and virtually ANY hair texture will work well for this look! If you have a square face shape this look will complement you.

Recommended Products:

If you have hair that’s a finer texture, you may want to give the sections you are braiding a little spritz of hairspray before you braid. Try Session Spray by Kevin Murphy. This will ensure that the braid stays smooth without any flyaways.

17. The Deeply Parted Dame

A sexy, deep side part is a great way to switch up your look without making any permanent changes this fall season. Also, moving your part a bit from time to time can create more body and volume around your face!

Long Hairstyle with Deep Side Part

How To Style:

  1. Begin with dry hair that’s parted deeply to the side. It should be directly above the edge of one eyebrow. Style your bangs as desired.
  2. Use a 1-inch curling iron to curl small sections of hair.
  3. Once everything has been curled, use your fingers to gently comb out the curls so they appear more natural.
  4. Spray everything with a medium hold hairspray.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This look is awesome if you have a bit of natural wave and simply want to add to it. Thick hair will look fuller and more voluminous with a look like this, but this style can actually be achieved with any type of hair. Sharp features would be softened by this look.

Recommended Products:

A good heat protectant spray is crucial if you want to keep your hair healthy while heat styling. Try Kevin Murphy’s Damage Manager Spray.

18. Pin Up Perfection

The pin up-inspired style is all the rage this year, so why not give it a shot? If you haven’t tested out this retro style on yourself, now’s the time!

Pin Up Hairstyle

How To Style:

  1. Begin with dry hair parted to the side. Use a curling iron and curl each section of hair towards your face.
  2. Gather two sections on either side of your part that are about three inches wide. Smooth out these sections with a boar bristle brush and roll the hair around your fingers to create a pin curl. Secure this to your head using bobby pins. For a more detailed tutorial, check for a video on YouTube.
  3. Brush through the curls in the rest of your hair.
  4. Spray everything with a strong hold hairspray.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This look is perfect for those long haired gals with some shorter layers around the face. If you have fine to medium texture hair, this look will be simpler for you to create. A round face will be complemented by this funky retro style.

Recommended Products:

For a look like this, you definitely want to be sure you have the proper hairspray to hold it into place. Try Moroccan Oil Hairspray for a long lasting hold that won’t get sticky or crunchy.

19. Naturally Curled Cutie

If you have natural curls, this fall-worthy style is practically already done for you. Just add a little product!

Long Hair with Natural Curls

How To Style:

  1. If your hair is naturally curly, gently towel dry it after you wash. Add some mousse and/or curl cream, and then use a diffuser to dry it.
  2. If you don’t have naturally curly hair, start with dry hair and then use a 1-inch curling iron on very small sections.
  3. Spray with a light hold finishing spray.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

Very curly hair is ideal for this look since it will require minimal styling time and effort. If you have a long or oval shaped face, you will be perfectly suited to this style.

Recommended Products:

Bumble and Bumble makes great curl products. Try their curl cream mixed with a bit of Body Builder Mousse by Kevin Murphy.

Tips:

A diffuser is an attachment for your blow dryer that diffuses heat and helps to keep curly hair smooth when blow drying. If you don’t have one, it’s a must for curly girls! You can find one at your local beauty supply store.

20. Straight and Extra Sleek

A long fringe with long, straight hair is a lethal combination…in a good way! This ultra glam look is a Fall 2014 “must try”.

Straight Hairstyle with Long Fringe

How To Style:

  1. Begin by drying hair and getting it as smooth as possible with either a round brush or a flat paddle brush.
  2. If straighter hair is desired, use a flat iron.
  3. Apply a shine serum or spray to your ends, keeping it away from your roots.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

If you have a round face, this look will be absolute perfection on you! The long fringe is a great way to disguise a long forehead and really frame your beautiful makeup or perfectly shaped eyebrows. If your hair is naturally straight, you will be at an advantage for creating this style. Longer layers are best here.

Recommended Products:

A shine spray will make a huge difference when creating a look like this.

21. Big Hair, Don’t Care!

Here’s another fun look for those of you with long, natural curls. It’s easy to create, so give it a try for your next night out. It will definitely ensure that all eyes are on you!

Long Naturally Curly HairstyleLong Naturally Curly Hairstyle Side

How To Style:

  1. If your hair is naturally curly, gently towel dry it after you wash. Add some mousse and/or curl cream, then use a diffuser to dry it. Be sure to create a deep part and push it mostly to one side when drying to give added volume.
  2. If you don’t have naturally curly hair, start with dry hair then use a 1-inch curling iron on very small sections. Use a back combing brush to create more volume at the roots.
  3. Spray with a light hold finishing spray.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

Again, this look is much simpler and quicker to create if you have naturally curly hair. A slender more oval face will be complemented by this look.

Recommended Products:

For a look like this you really need a hairspray that won’t get sticky and crunchy. My all time favorite is Classic Hairspray by Bumble and Bumble. You can’t overuse that stuff — it’s magic!
