How would you describe this look?

I would describe this a soft long layered Deva Curl cut. It has just enough face framing to keep her hair from being heavy around the face and it’s long enough to wear for multiple styles including braids, without any layers falling out.

I love this look because it is a great wash and go style!

Any advice for someone considering it?

This is a great haircut for girls with curly hair to make it easy for the parent and child. Curly cuts and products are going to make styling a breeze. I tell all my clients to leave a decent amount of sulfate free, paraben free and silicone free conditioner in the hair, scrunch in the product on soaking wet curls. Scrunch with a t-shirt and air dry!

This is an easy styling method to teach your kids to make the wash day go a little easier.

Deva curl recently came out with a “pre poo” called “Wash Day Wonder”, to make detangling before washing easier too!

How would you describe this look?

I describe this as a classic, dry, curl by curl cut that was designed with her natural texture in mind to create a waterfall effect on the hair. We left the layers long to give options for styling it up or in protective patterns.

I love that it can celebrate the natural texture while making curly hair manageable and enjoyable.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is perfect for anyone looking to celebrate natural texture and enhance their curls.

The most important thing for this look is products and hydration. Look for sulfate and silicone-free cleansers and conditioners which allow water to penetrate the cuticle layer and truly hydrate the hair. Anyone with any type of curls can really make peace with their hair with the right products and application techniques.

Make sure you only detangle and style while wet, using the natural benefit of water to hydrate the hair and keep it frizz-free.

Curly Lob

Q&A with style creator, Kristal Kaiser
Hairstylist @ Salon Skanda in Sandy Springs, GA

How would you describe this look?

I would describe her look as a curly lob. My favorite thing about this look is how much joy it brought her to see the potential of her curl.

By removing the excess weight and adding in some necessary layering, her hair transformed before our eyes and she was so excited.

Any advice for someone considering it?

If you have curly hair and are considering this look, I’d say go for it, but find someone that knows how to work with curly hair! I highly recommend finding a Deva certified salon. You can go to their website, type in your zip code, and it will tell you where the closest one is located.

The Deva Curl products are made for wavy to curly hair and I am completely obsessed! When I say Deva Curl changed my life, I am not exaggerating. I straightened my hair every day for 25 years until I received my first No-Poo transformation service and Deva Cut. The No-Poo service is the perfect intro to the line. A Deva certified stylist will take you step by step through your styling routine, all along creating a custom kit to fit your curly girl needs.

The Deva Cut is done dry so we can see exactly where your curls fall and see the shape we’re building as we go. If you’re in the Atlanta area, come check us out at Salon Skanda. We’re a team-based, Deva certified salon, and we LOVE curls!

Customized Curls

Stylist / Curl Specialist / Co-creator @ Parlour Hair Salon in Washington, DC

How would you describe this look?

I love creating looks for curly hair. The first thing I do is figure out what type of maintenance a client is willing to do from day to day.

I like this cut because it allowed my client to be able to wear a fun, modern, and cute topknot, or wear it down for a softer feel. I love to create cuts that allow my clients to go from look to look.

Any advice for someone considering it?

You should start by having a good cut customized for your specific curl pattern, then select the product that works best with your curls. Curly hair tends to be on the dry side, so don’t forget to hydrate those curls! Always use the recommended amount of product to set the curls in place.

Use a leave-in conditioner to hydrate your curls, then layer in a medium hold gel or mousse to add the control and hold needed for a long-lasting look. Either air dry for a more natural look or use a diffuser to add body and volume. I love to use an anti-humidity or a light working spray to finish. It provides an extra layer of protection to fight frizz and fuzz.

No matter how old you are, a great stylist and a customized cut will always make you feel like a million bucks.

Wash & Go Curls

Q&A with style creator, Christina Gethers
Licensed Cosmetology Professional @ ShawnKrys Inc in Philadelphia, PA

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as a wash and go. Now, it’s not as simple as washing your hair and air drying because if this hair dries without the right products, there will most likely be a lot of frizz! To achieve these beautiful curls, I started by removing her dead ends while strategically creating a shape that would complement her face. I used my own curly cutting technique to create this shape.

My favorite thing about this style is that it is fitting for someone with an active lifestyle, is very low maintenance, and seems to look better and better as it gets older. I find that many of my clients embrace and look forward to that “lived-in” look a few days after they leave the salon.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Pay attention to the amount of heat you use on your hair. Heat damage ruins the natural curl pattern. I encourage clients who want to wear their hair curly to consider making it a lifestyle because excessive heat can compromise your curl pattern.

This style is very durable for people who want to work out and not worry about sweating. It’s very low maintenance and is great for people who have an “on the go” lifestyle.

I recommend making an appointment with a licensed hairstylist who specializes in curly hair of all textures. I specialize in curly hair and we use the Ouidad product line at our salon. I love this product line because they have different products for every curl type. Ouidad understands that all curls have a different/specific needs. When consulting with new clients, I prescribe the products I’ll use for them. Most of the time they receive a curly cut/shape as well.

I always send my clients home with knowledge of what products were used and I educate them on how to maintain their curls in between visits. For someone with a similar hair type to the client in the picture, I would say the that maintaining moisture is the best thing you can do. Dry, brittle hair can lead to breakage, and who wants that?!

Curly Bob

Q&A with style creator, Valerie Lester
Hairstylist / Salon Owner @ Color Salon & Spa in Morrisville, NC

How would you describe this look?

This client was looking for a change! She had long hair that had been growing for years and suffered from split ends and very tangled tresses. This cut was a fresh start. We did the traditional Deva Cut (a specialized dry cutting technique) to give her curls new life.

My favorite thing about this bob is how much it complements her face and makes her smile!

Any advice for someone considering it?

The Deva Curl cut and three step styling technique is a total game changer for anyone with texture in their hair. Curly hair needs moisture and particular consideration to different curl patterns to ensure a balanced cut. To get this look, you will need both.

The length of a bob will always depend on facial features and face shape and is tailored to each client. This styling process takes a little more time up front, but will last for days, therefore saving time down the road.

We used Deva Curl No Poo cleanser, One Conditioner, B-Leavin Curl Booster, and Light Defining Gel. This left her curls hydrated, defined and soft.

Q&A with style creator, Sandra Moreno
Deva Curl Advanced Stylist / Redken Certified Hair Colorist @ Designs by Sandra in Sunnyvale, CA

How would you describe this look?

This little girl has “S” wavy curls and loves to braid it. She needs to be able to put it up for dance and loves it long. In order to help her with her lifestyle, I kept her hair one length in the back and layered the front so that when she wears it down it won’t be so heavy. I cut her hair dry on her natural curls.

My favorite thing to do when creating a cut for someone is customizing it to fit their needs. I love that this cut is so versatile for her and that it was created by air drying. Easy styling!

Any advice for someone considering it?

This client was styled with Deva Curl LowPoo Delight, Delight One Condition (as a leave-in conditioner) and Deva Curl Arc Angel. When I work with curly hair, I want you to know how to use the products and which ones best suit your lifestyle and curl type.

I recommended that she take all three products in the shower and do her styling at the end of her shower with her head tilted forward so the products don’t get on her skin. We want you to capture your curls at their finest moment, sopping wet and coated with conditioner!

If you have natural waves or curls, I definitely recommend finding a hairdresser who understands curly hair and one who embraces the air dry method so that your hair will work with your styling routine for the life of your haircut.

Deva Miracle

Q&A with style creator, Mikayla Hazelton
Certified DevaCurl Stylist / Master Colorist @ Shan Hair in Brookline, MA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

Here at Shan Hair, we would describe this haircut as a “Deva Miracle”. A lot of our new clients have never had a Deva-inspired cut (dry haircut). This haircut is a game changer for curly girls and guys.

One of my favorite things about this haircut is how happy it made her feel. This brave little girl came in with very long hair. We cut off about six inches, which is a lot for curly hair. It was so uplifting seeing someone at her age loving and embracing her natural hair. #CURLCONFIDENCE

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I recommend using the DevaCurl line of products because of their natural ingredients and overall health for curls. For her, I used the DevaCurl zero lather conditioning cleanser, No-Poo, followed by the One Condition original conditioner to detangle.

To style her hair, I used the Ultra Defining Gel and B’Leave-In curl plumper on very wet hair. After she was fully dry, I gave the hair a shake and a light scrunch. Her curls were soft, shiny, bouncy and defined!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this cut for any type of curly or wavy hair. This haircut is tailored to each individual person and will work with all curl types and face shapes.

Tight Curls

Tight Curls hairstyleInstagram @deenavec

Q&A with style creator, Deena Marie Vecchio
Blonde Specialist / DevaCurl Stylist @ Curl Hair and Wellness in Bryn Mawr, PA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is the perfect look for anyone with dry, frizzy, texturized hair! If your hair reacts to humidity, the Deva Cut is right for you.

My favorite thing about this look is that it can work for a person with the slightest wave, all the way to the person with the tightest curl!

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

Hydration hydration hydration! Curls love moisture, so the more hydrated the hair the better the outcome. For this particular curl pattern, I went right for the Deva Curl Decadence line. This line has the most hydration for the tightest curls. We used the Deva No-Poo Decadence cleanser followed by the One Condition Decadence leave-in conditioner.

For styling, we used the Deva Super Cream right on top of that leave-in conditioner. The key is to apply the product to soaking wet hair so you are not left feeling sticky or crunchy.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for any client with a tight curl pattern. It’s perfect for young girls to air dry and go, or for the busy mom to send off her kids and start the day.

Men can Deva too! This cut/styling method can be used by anyone whose hair reacts to humidity.

Thanks to the invention of the headband, we can easily keep our hair down with it swept back away from our faces. A headband can truly be a curly haired girl’s best friend. With so many adorable headbands these days you are not only be practical but totally fashionable.

Braided Beauty

Braids are still a hot trend and are perfect for a kid on the go. This awesome look is amazing for any hair type and really great for girls with curly hair. No matter what type of curl you have, by simply braiding the front of your hair you help keep your look fresh and out of your face.

2. Part hair to the side and section out the area you want to braid.

3. Braid your hair to the side and secure with a small clear elastic or matching bobby pins.

Curly Sue

This adorable curly bob is full of bounce! Help keep curl under control by simply tying up the top section of hair. Keeping it slightly messy helps keep the texture throughout and also keeps it more kid friendly.

Little Girl with Sweet Curly Hairstyle

How To Style:

1. Style and dry curls as usual.

2. Gently grab a top square or triangle section of hair and secure with an elastic band.

Recommended Products:

I love Ouchless Goody Hair Elastics because they are gentle on hair which makes them perfect for little girls and their little curls.

Best Face Shape & Hair Type:

Round faces look the sweetest with this short bob haircut. Super curly or soft waves would work great with this haircut and style.

Tip:

Match your elastic bands to the outfit or buy black ones to go with everything.

Soft Texture

This long curly mane is kept girly and soft by keeping the coils natural and product free. Lots of hair can be hard to manage, especially with curly hair. Pulling half of your hair up is perfect because it solves the overwhelming dilemma but still shows off her pretty curls.

Long Dark Curly Hair with Pink Headband

How To Style:

1. Detangle hair out of the shower and pull up the top half of hair and secure with a clip or an elastic band.

2. Let hair air dry while it’s pulled back.

Recommended Products:

You don’t really need any product for this particular look but you might try a leave-in conditioner like Thermal Protection and Detangle Spray by Privé to keep curls healthy and moisturized.

Best Face Shape & Hair Type:

All face shapes would be great candidates for this hairstyle although if you have a larger forehead, this style would accentuate that. Tight natural coils of hair are shown but any curl type can wear this half up hairstyle.

Tip:

If you have coarse curly hair you may want to use a thicker conditioner in the shower, too. Coarse hair needs lots of moisture to stay looking healthy and bouncy.

Side Bangs

If you do opt for side bangs with curly hair you may want to flat iron them every other day or so like shown on the model in the picture. The balance of curly hair and smooth bangs is nice and creates a fun and fresh style.

Side Bangs - Medium Curly Brunette Hairstyle

How To Style:

1. Part hair to the side out of the shower and style and dry your curls as you usually would for your hair type.

2. Section out thin pieces of the bang to flat iron until the entire area of bangs is smoothed and to the side.

Recommended Products:

Put a small amount of Moroccan Oil’s famous treatment on your hands, rub them together and gently pull the product through your hair when it’s dry, but before flat ironing. This will add incredible shine and also provide protection from heat.

Best Face Shape & Hair Type:

Oval faces would look great with the side bangs in this hairstyle. All types of curls can try this look out.

Tip:

Flick the ends of the flat iron to the side when you reach the tips of the hair to create a softer shape when straightening.

Bouncy Bangs

Who said you can’t have bangs if you have curly hair? Keep the bangs long (especially if cut wet because curls spring up shorter when dry!) for soft face framing bangs. Bangs are great for girls who have a ton of hair and have a hard time keeping it out of their face. Cutting bangs helps to open up and frame the face.

Curly Hair With Bouncy Blonde Bangs - Little Girl Hairstyle

How To Style:

1. Use a wide toothed comb out of the shower to detangle and comb bangs forward.

2. Apply your favorite curling cream, mousse or foam with your hands from roots to tips and scrunch up to enhance the curls.

3. Let your hair dry and try not to touch even when dry to minimize frizz.

Recommended Products:

Try the Curl Defining Mousse from Moroccan Oil. It is a unique and light, non-greasy formula that will make your curls shine.

Best Face Shape & Hair Type:

This look is great for all face shapes, especially larger foreheads that may need to be covered a bit. Natural curls that have a uniform wave throughout the whole head are great for this hairstyle.

Tip:

If you’re nervous about committing to bangs, know that the curls can be stretched or twisted back out of the way if necessary.

Classic Pigtails

You can’t go wrong with pigtails and this hairstyle couldn’t be more low maintenance. Sometimes young girls with curly hair just need their hair up and out of their way! Braided pigtails are the perfect solution for days such as those.

Cute Brunette Pigtails - Little Girl Hairstyle

How To Style:

1. Detangle hair and part down the middle or side, depending on your preference.

2. Braid each section and secure with an elastic band.

Recommended Products:

When hair is wet, use a nice light curling cream like the one from Sexy Hair’s curly line. It’s a great product for keeping your hair curly with a nice softness and is great for daily use.

Best Face Shape & Hair Type:

Pigtails are amazing because they really do work on any hair type, face, shape or texture. Have you ever seen a little girl NOT look cute with pigtails?

Tip:

Leave about two inches of tail after the elastic band to show off just the right amount of curly texture. Add ribbons for an even cuter look!

Hopefully these simple styles inspired you to try something new with you or your little girl’s curly hair. You don’t have to spend hours of styling time to create a fun and fresh look that’s easy and manageable. Enjoy!
