FRENCH TWIST WITH CURLS: This style is very elegant and fairly simple to do. The hair needs to be longer with some long layers by the face.
Suitable for:
Face shape: oval, square, diamond
Hair texture: fine to medium
Hair density: average to thick
Styling:
Time: 40-50 minutes
Techniques: paddle brush, 1” barrel curling iron, bobby pins
Products: firm styling gel, working spray, gel wax, finishing spray
Styling Steps:
1. Start with dry hair that has been prepped with a firm hold styling gel. (Gel applied when hair was damp.)
2. Separate the front half of hair from the back half of hair by making an ear to ear parting on the top of the head.
3. Clip front hair up out of the way.
4. Working on the back half of hair, begin back combing the back of the hair. Try to get a good base of back combing at the scalp.
5. Begin to smooth the hair with a brush or comb so that back combing isn’t apparent when the style is viewed from either side.
6. Pull half of the back hair over to the center of the back of the head (go slightly off center as if on the other half’s side!)
7. Take a bobby pin and begin pinning to hold this half of hair over on the other half. (Pins should be going in a somewhat vertical line in the middle of the back of the head). *Tip: try to criss-cross the pins a bit as you put them in. This will give durability to the style!
8. Now direct the remaining half of hair back over to the other side (where we just came from) and begin rolling the hair over the pins that you previously placed in the hair. Place a bobby pin inside the roll as you go up the middle back of the head.
9. You should have a beautiful twist up the middle back of the head and have some ends that are left at the crown of the head.
10. Tuck those ends inside the hole of the roll and pin.
11. Now working with the front half of hair, begin curling the ends of the hair with a curling iron. If curls do not seem firm enough, spray on a small amount of working spray before curling the hair.
12. Once front ends are all curled, lightly brush through to make the hair easy to work with and not too stiff.
13. Leave out some front tendrils by the face.
14. Gather up the rest of the top (leave out the sides) and lightly back brush (same as back combing but with a brush) the top hair.
15. Smooth the outer surface and direct the hair back to the crown.
16. Arrange the hair in a pleasing manner on the top of the crown. Pin curls as needed.
17. Bring sides up towards the crown and pin and allow curls to cascade down a bit.
18. Blend the top and side with the wire end of a back combing comb, so that they appear to be one entire section.
19. Repeat on the other side.
20. Arrange curls in a pleasing manner giving height on the crown and a cascade of curls in the back.
21. Finish with hairspray.
