FUN AND SOPHISTICATED This asymmetrical style requires long hair (below shoulder blades) with long layers to accomplish this look. Slight tapering around the face adds interest to this updo.
Suitable for:
Face shape: oval, round, square, diamond, pear
Hair texture: fine, medium, course
Hair density: average to thick
Styling:
Time: 40-50 minutes
Techniques: large barrel curling iron, hair pins, bobby pins, teasing comb
Products: firm gel, working spray, thermal setting spray, hair polish, firm hairspray
Styling Steps:
1. Start with dry hair that has been prepped with a firm hold styling gel. (Gel applied when hair was damp.)
2. Part the hair with a side part. (Doesn’t have to be clean and crisp!)
3. Leave out a section of bang fringe to let fall on the side of the face.
4. Take a parting from top of ear to top of ear, leaving out all the front hair. Clip this hair out of the way to work with later.
5. Back comb the back section of hair to add a cushion.
6. Lightly smooth this hair as you roll it into a roll starting at the nape and working to the top of this section.
7. Add bobby pins into the roll as you go.
8. Leave the tail out on the side that your bang is being left out. Use decorative clips or bobby pins to secure the hair and hold it in place.
9. Use a curling iron to curl the ends of the tail that are left out.
10. Now using the hair on the sides of the head that was previously clipped out of the way, begin curling this hair, just to add some loose curl to the ends of the hair.
11. Back comb at the base of the hair to help add some fullness and help to hold the style.
12. Take the section that is the “light” section and begin lightly smoothing and combing the hair towards the back of the section. Arrange in a pleasing manner and pin the hair into the back roll to help hold the hair. Criss-cross the pins to help add extra stability.
13. Now taking the “heavy” section on remaining side, and lightly smooth and comb the hair towards the back of the section. Arrange the ends so they fall on the heavy side to help create an asymmetrical style, with the curls tumbling on the heavy side.
14. Use working spray wherever necessary to help shape and mold curls and roll as you are pinning and arranging the hair.
15. Use the large iron to add a slight bend on the ends of the bang that is left out on the side.
16. Use a couple drops of hair polish on your fingers to run over the curls, and sides and back in the same direction that the hair flows. Just to add extra shine and polish to the style and help to smooth down any flyaways.
17. Finish with a firm hold hairspray.
