CREATIVE GENIUS: The hair for this updo needs to be about shoulder blade length. This particular cut has a section for bangs that is shorter layers that flow into longer layers in the back. (Variations of this model are in the Down do Gallery.)
Suitable for:
Face shape: oval, round, square
Hair texture: fine to medium
Hair density: semi-thin, average, thick
Styling:
Time: 30-40 minutes
Techniques: paddle brush, curling iron or flat iron, hair pins, bobby pins, back combing comb with end prongs
Products: firm styling gel, texturizing paste, working spray, hairspray
Styling Steps:
1. Start with dry hair that has been prepped with a firm hold styling gel. (Gel applied when hair was damp.)
2. Spray bangs lightly with working spray.
3. Curl bangs going back, but direct them slightly to one side. *Tip: If you use a flat iron to curl the bangs, you can get scalp lift and just the bend on the ends of the hair for a trendier look.
4. Begin back combing the bangs and keep working section by section on top towards the back of the head. Back comb tightly particularly at the crown to give a good working base to the hair.
5. Continue to back comb through the middle back of the hair but less than what was done at the crown.
6. Using the paddle brush begin gathering and smoothing the hair as if doing a high ponytail.
7. Once hair is all gathered at the crown, keeping the hair smooth as possible, begin rolling the hair from the crown down the middle back of the head towards the nape. *Tip: As you roll, push upward toward the crown to give lift to the crown and pin inside the roll. (This will look like a reverse French twist.)
8. Once hair is rolled and you are at the nape, you should have some ends sticking out. Secure the roll with bobby pins inside the roll.
9. Cross another bobby pin over the pins you’ve already put inside the roll to form “X’s” with the pins inside the roll. This will help hold the style all night long!
10. Fan out the ends that are sticking out at the nape for a funky look. Use a bit of texture paste on the fingertips and then spray with hairspray to hold.
