ELEGANT TWIST ON A BALLERINA BUN! This style requires hair that is fairly thick and a bit of patience, but the results are worth it! Hair needs to be at least below shoulder length.
Suitable for:
Face shape: oval, square
Hair texture: fine, medium, course
Hair density: average to thick
Styling:
Time: 50-60 minutes
Techniques: covered band for a ponytail, a rat (a pad with tapered ends to add height to the hair), bobby pins, hairpins, ornamental tiara or headband
Products: texturizing paste, working spray, firm hold hairspray
Styling Steps:
1. Start with dry hair that has been prepped with a firm hold styling gel. (Gel applied when hair was damp)
2. Begin by parting the hair from the top of one ear across the top of the head to the other top of the ear. Clip this front hair out of the way to style later.
3. Make another sectional parting at the crown. Make a circle on the crown, approximately 4-5” in diameter.
4. Make a pony tail in the center of this circular section with the covered band.
5. Take the rat and pin it around the pony tail.
6. Take small sections of the pony tail and begin covering the rat with the pony tail hair. Use bobby pins to pin the hair securely under the rat. Hide the ends under the rat by wrapping excess ends around the base of the ponytail. Try to leave a small section from the pony tail out if possible. You want to use enough hair to cover the rat and make it undetectable.
7. Working at the nape of the hair now, take a section on the bottom side of the nape, and apply a bit of texture paste to help smooth and add shine to the section. Take the section you are working with and direct it across to the other side of the bun you created earlier. Pin this section securely under the bun.
8. Repeat on other side of the nape to the other bottom side section. (If you did these two steps properly, you’ll have created an overlapped “X” at the nape)
9. Now working with the hair on the sides. Part the hair where your desired front part is.
10. Now begin smoothing a side section with texture paste and direct that hair to the back towards the bun. Pin that section to the bun. You can either hide the ends under the bun as well, or depending on the length of that section, you can put a slight curl in those ends and let them fall down if the look is appealing.
11. Working on the last side, repeat the step above, but do not leave those ends hanging out. Secure the ends under the bun.
12. If you were able to leave out ends from the ponytail in the crown, go back and put a slight curl in those ends and then smooth with texturizing paste. This will all depend on the length of the ends. Improvise and have fun!
13. Finish with hairspray to hold.
14. Add ornamental tiara or headband at the crown, in front of the bun.
