Q&A with style creator, Dana Raia
Owner / Lead Artist @ Dana Raia Hair + Makeup in Charlotte, NC

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as a classic formal style chignon with a modern spin. My favorite part about it would be the softness/texture in the crown, making it feel a bit more relaxed than your typical chignon.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look would be great for anyone with hair a bit longer than shoulder length! This style is a perfect combination of simplicity and elegance.

For anyone looking to achieve this look, I used a smaller curling wand (1/2 inch) in the crown area to create texture and movement.

To achieve that polished shine, I used the Kenra shine spray and for hold, Paul Mitchell extra body hairspray – my total must have!

60s-Inspired Twist

Q&A with style creator, Matthew Morris
Session Hairstylist / Salon Owner @ Matthew Morris Salon & Skincare in Denver, CO

How would you describe this look?

My favorite thing about this look is that it’s hard to tell if it’s a French or Italian twist. Or both! It’s a 60s-inspired, bad girl look.

I picture it on a teenager in the 60s with her boyfriend’s black motorcycle jacket on with high-waisted jeans. But it can be really soft as well. It could even go bridal if done with finesse!

Any advice for someone considering it?

Personality is one thing you’ll have to have or this look will be wearing you instead of the other way around. It is not for the faint of heart and requires attitude and grace. It’s just shy of a Patsy Stone power French twist. What makes it softer is that it’s slightly disheveled and the back is down. It’s strong but still approachable.

The more polished this gets, the more serious. By deconstructing it a bit, it gets easier on the eyes. If you are insistent on statement earrings or necklace, the hair is away to showcase these.

Perfect products for creating this are both from Kerastase. Use VIP to help create volume and to help hold on to hairpins. Use Lacque Couture to spray on sections pre-curling and after it’s all up to keep the look together and to finish.

Celtic-Inspired

Picture of Celtic knots evening hairstyleInstagram @thewarrensalon

Q&A with style creator, Heather Erdosy
Owner / Operator @ The Warren Salon in Bethlehem, PA

How would you describe this look?

My inspiration for this look was taken from a Celtic-themed gala, so I went for a combo of criss-cross and Celtic knots to replicate designs I see on most Celtic prints and jewelry.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look worked great on my customer with very fine, shorter hair. This is a sleek, sophisticated style that can work on most hair lengths and types.

I used dry shampoo to amp up her volume and give some grip. I used a matte pomade to smooth down each crossover. This really helps to ensure stray hairs are controlled. Finish with hairspray!

This is a style that any age can wear and with any attire.

Soft and Romantic Style

Q&A with style creator, Shannon Morgan
Stylist @ Adorn by Shannon Morgan in North Texas & Houston

How would you describe this look?

This is a soft and romantic style. One of my favorite things about this style is that it allows the client to have the best of both worlds. It is all set in place like you have your hair in an updo, yet the hair is down and loose.

This is a style that works wonderful for those clients who feel more comfortable with their hair as part of their adornment.

Any advice for someone considering it?

The trick to hairstyles similar to this one is in the styling products, not the finishing products. Using plenty of mousse allows for a strong setting of the curls and a base for styling the hair, all while keeping it looking soft and shiny.

This style works well for any age client and can be as formal or as casual as you choose to dress it.

Textured French Twist

Q&A with style creator, Nicole Rich
Cosmetologist @ Studio O in Saratoga, CA

How would you describe this look?

I call this a textured French twist. The French twist is a very classic look that I’ve modified into something more modern while still keeping the elegance of the style. The dimension of color really comes through with the different layers of hair wrapped around.

I love the texture in this look. It allows for pieces to either stay intact or fall down throughout your event and still give it a put together feel. This is my favorite thing about the look!

Any advice for someone considering it?

This client was a mother of the bride who was worried her hair was too thin or fine for this look. However, a textured French twist is great for anyone who has this type of hair. With the right product, you can make a client’s hair look fuller than it really is.

To recreate this look, you only need a few items. I used a teasing comb, hairspray, bobby pins, and texture paste. It’s a perfect look for any event and for anyone who wants their hair to look polished and out of their face for the day!

Polished Yet Playful

Polished Yet Playful hairstyleInstagram @emmagenejuarez

Q&A with style creator, Mailee
Designer @ Gene Juarez Salon & Spa in Tacoma, WA

How would you describe this look?

This look is elegant and polished, yet still playful with some of the soft, face-framing pieces. My favorite element of this look is the movement and dimension.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This is a very versatile style. It would work for a formal event or even a day in the office. It does work for all hair types and textures. This model had coarse/medium density hair.

I like using a mouse to prep the hair for some texture, or even second-day hair works. Finish off with a medium hold spray.

Modern Braided Chignon

Q&A with style creator, Andrea McLean
Stylist @ Hair Mosaics Hair & Nail Salon in Fredericksburg, VA

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as a braided chignon. It is truly a modern take on a classic look. My favorite thing about this formal style is the simplicity of the style. It is simple but polished.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Some advice I would give to any client wanting any formal look is to consider the setting. This look is perfect for someone who has hair that doesn’t hold a curl well. This look will hold up well from “I do” to dinner and dancing!

We chose this look for her because she has an outdoor summer wedding and very dense hair that won’t hold a curl for a long period of time. I used Redken Powder Grip at her root to create texture and hold. For heat protection and extra hold while curling, I used Redken Hotsets. I finished the look with Redken Triple Take to polish the look and control any flyaways.

Versatile Updo

Versatile Updo hairstyleInstagram @maddshairr

Q&A with style creator, Madison Romain
Hairstylist @ Time Out Too Tanning & Salon in Essexville, MI

How would you describe this look?

This is a unique look for someone that has thicker hair. My favorite thing about this look is that it is a great updo for a formal, or possibly a wedding. It could even be a casual look!

Any advice for someone considering it?

This is a great look for any classy or formal event. It could be dressed down a bit by simply pulling some pieces out to make it look a bit messy.

Dramatic High Chignon

Q&A with style creator, Kylie Craig Croon
Hairstylist @ Salon Buzz Chicago in Chicago, IL

How would you describe this look?

This is a dramatic high chignon on one of my gorgeous bridal clients. I love that this updo is sleek and high fashion, the perfect complement to this bride’s couture gown. (Photo credits to Ann & Kam Photography)

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is great for a wedding or black tie affair on a client that likes a little drama and is comfortable with all of her hair pulled up and off her face. This hairstyle works best on very long hair that is fine to medium thickness. Extensions can also be added to create this look with medium length hair.

Romantic Boho Upstyle

Romantic Boho Upstyle hairstyleInstagram @hairicome_

Q&A with style creator, Melissa Howlett
Bridal Hairstylist @ Hairicome Mobile Hairdressing in Gold Coast, QLD

How would you describe this look?

This is one of the most popular formal hairstyles at the moment! This is a romantic upstyle with a boho feel. A big Dutch braid is braided over to one side and into a softly curled side bun with softly curled bits left out around the face.

My favorite thing about this style is the big Dutch braid because it is the feature of this hairstyle!

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is great for most hair types, but normal to thick hair is better for the braid. This is a great style for any formal occasion and makes a perfect bridal hairstyle.

This look has a very romantic boho feel and look great in both light and dark colored hair!

Effortless Boho Braid

Effortless Boho Braid hairstyleInstagram @alyssab.hair

Q&A with style creator, Alyssa Bustamante
Hairstylist @ The Living Room Salon in Costa Mesa, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as boho chic. My favorite thing about it is that it’s simple and effortless.

What tips or products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I prefer the hair to be one to two days “dirty”. I recommend Oribe Dry Texture sprayed at the roots before starting your Dutch braid, then finish with Oribe’s Free Styler weightless hairspray.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

The type of client I recommend this look for would be someone with long, fine to thick hair. I recommend this for someone who doesn’t want a plain ponytail and likes to wear their hair pulled up or back.
