28 Glamorous & Sexy Short Curly Hairstyles

Having short hair is such a freeing thing. You have more time, use less product, you’re cooler in the summer and can toss on a scarf in winter, no problem. The dilemma is what to do with it that’s different and fun. Here are some beautiful options for short curly hairstyles!

Playfully Soft Twist

Curly short hair with a twistTara Walker / Instagram

Style by Tara Walker
Stylist @ Mousey Browne in Sydney, Australia

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This look is soft and sexy with a playful twist. It is the epitome of minimal fuss, maximum hair that you can truly wake up and wear!
My favorite thing about this look is the shape and the fact that it’s designed to work with the natural texture of the hair (curly). It’s manageable and easy to recreate.

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

I recommend a cream-based product with a small amount of hold for control and a lightweight water wax for shine and definition. I used Tough Guy Water Wax and Boss Dog Styling Cream, both by Fatboy.

What type of person would this look work best for?

This look is for someone with curly hair and a busy lifestyle. It is for the person who doesn’t have a lot of time to spend on their hair, but would like to wear it out and look sharp.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?
Be prepared to work with the natural texture of your hair! If you have a well crafted haircut–a haircut with a beautiful shape that works for your face and your style–it really shouldn’t matter how your hair is behaving on any given day!

Disconnected Curly Pixie

Q&A with style creator, Cherise Alexander
Stylist @ Immortal Beloved in Washington, D.C.

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a disconnected curly pixie. My favorite thing about it is how little styling is required for it to look fabulous!

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

I would recommend a curl cream or curl gel like Oribe’s Curl Control Silkening Creme or Oribe’s Curl Gloss. This look is best air dried, but can also be diffused on high heat/low intensity.

What type of person would this look work best for?

This look works best on someone with naturally curly hair, but can also be achieved on someone with straighter hair if they want to use product to give it texture and hold.

A short hairstyle like this is for someone fun and carefree who doesn’t have a lot of time to spend styling, but also loves to show off their adventurous style and personality!

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

Be prepared to get regular touch-ups with this cut! You won’t have to do much styling on a daily basis, but you will need to maintain this look with regular salon visits. The back and sides will grow out fast and the top will get very heavy.

Short, Natural Curly Hair

Style by Alicia Torrens
Owner/Stylist @ Brandon Hairstyling in Brandon, FL

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

Is a young and youthful cut for someone embracing their natural texture. I love the shape and how revived the hair looks with some moisture love and care!

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

I highly recommend the Q-Redew handheld steamer, DevaCurl Heaven in Hair Deep Treatment , DevaCurl No Poo Decadence, DevaCurl Cupercream Coconut Styler, and DevaCurl B’Leave In Gel.

What type of person would this look work best for?

This haircut would be suitable type 3 curly hair type 4 coily hair. This is a great haircut for most face shapes. It’s easy to wear and it’s a great wash-and-go look.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

The best tip I can give someone who wants to wear this kind of style is to not be afraid to cut your hair. Hair grows! It’s important for you to take care of your hair — limit heat styling and do regular deep treatments. Use water soluble products and stay away from silicone! Always use a cleanser instead of a shampoo.

Modern, Short & Curly Harbinger

Modern short curly hairErin Olson / Instagram

Style by Erin Olson
Deva Certified Curl Specialist/Stylist @ Luna Bella Makeup and Hair in Santa Barbara, CA

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as a modern harbinger. What I love about it is that it is sophisticated with edge. It’s professional with personality. It is classy and bad ass at the same time. It’s everything a well rounded modern woman needs!

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

I love Deva Curl products and always recommend them for my curl friends. I used Deva Curl No-Poo Original and One Condition to hydrate the curls. This look is styled with Deva Curl’s Ultra Defining Gel and B’leave-In to give that killer definition and plump up those rockin’ curls.

What type of person would this look work best for?

I feel strongly this look would appear astonishing for almost any woman wanting a shorter hairstyle with personality and uniqueness. I do really love it for curly girls, yet any texture can rock this look. This hairstyle has so much versatility that it meets your bold businesswoman, your edgy trendsetter, your modern professional, the mature woman who loves style, or the teenage girl in a mood for something different!

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

My advice for someone considering this look is to be comfortable with your facial features being highlighted. Have fun with styling and the ease of shorter hair!

Curly Lob

Q&A with Style Creator Daisy Giles-U’u

Hairstylist @ Curl Power Salon in Minneapolis, MN

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This cut is a lob (long bob). It is a twist on the Devacut and Devabob that I tailored for this client. She had very long, loose and wavy hair and she wanted to see more curl, so we took off some length and gave her some exaggerated layers.

With it being much longer in the front, it is easier for her to still pull back her hair and it’s a bit more fun than the average bob. My client arrived with limp curls and left with a cut that highlighted her beautiful natural texture!

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

Product would be different depending on each client’s hair texture and health. For this hair texture (fine loose curls that need frizz control and assistance holding the natural curl), I recommend Devacurl Frizz Free Volumizing Foam and the Arc Angel Gel. These are lighter products that won’t weigh down loose curls even more.

What type of person would this look work best for?

This look is great for wavy and curly hair, but can be tailored for straight hair with less layers, and can look amazing with locs or twist-outs on highly textured hair. This look can lengthen clients with round faces, and is easy to pull back for active lifestyles because of the longer length of the hair in the front. This look can be worn in a low ponytail, but looks best with the hair down. This is a great cut for clients who aren’t quite ready for something too dramatic, but want something a little different than the average cut.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

This cut works great for clients who don’t mind maintenance and regular cuts. This cut works best when the back is kept short and above the shoulders. When the back gets too long, it doesn’t swing nicely over the shoulders. Wavy clients will need maintenance in two months, curlies in three to four months.

Warm Tones

Q&A with Style Creator Chelsea Stockhaus

Hairstylist @ Curl Power Salon in Minneapolis, MN

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

My client came to me with naturally dark brown curls that were a bit overgrown and was looking for a change to brighten up the dreary winter months. We shaped and cropped an adorable pixie cut to bring out her gorgeous facial features and used DevaCurl’s Pintura highlighting method to give her a brighter look that was tailored to her specific curl type. My favorite thing about this look is the confidence it brought her! You can tell she’s feeling fierce and sassy.

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

In order to keep curls happy and hydrated at home, I recommend DevaCurl’s Original No-Poo and One Condition for cleansing and conditioning. For the style, we used B’Leave In and Frizz-Free Volumizing Foam by DevaCurl to define and provide volume to her curl clusters.

What type of person would this look work best for?

The best part of a curly cut and Pintura highlighting is that each cut/color is tailored to your specific curl type! This look would be perfect for someone who wants something bright and funky, but a bit more low maintenance . Because of the Pintura highlighting method, it provides an easy grow out and is much more low maintenance than traditional highlighting techniques.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

My advice for someone considering this look it to make sure you have a thorough consultation with your stylist prior to your service to ensure you are on the same page about tone preferences and what will work best for your own personal style.

The Perfect Point

Q&A with Rok Švajger

Hairstylist @ Subrina Professional

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a chic curly look. That is a simple explanation, yet it describes what curly hair is all about. It’s all about the strong shape and the movement of the hair after drying naturally. What I love the most about curly texture or curly hair is the fact that you can really play with the haircutting shapes and techniques during the process of cutting.

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

Before I started drying hair, I applied Treatment as a fundamental product to build upon. An amazing product for making timeless curls is Curl Defining Cream. It is not only perfect for creating curls, but also for maintaining the perfect curly look.

What type of person would this look work best for?

I would say this look works best for anyone with naturally curly hair. If you have naturally curly hair, it’s really simple to maintain your everyday curly look.

Having a curly hairstyle is a great way of expressing your funky, easy going and open minded personality. That doesn’t mean that you can’t wear this hairstyle if you are a more business orientated person though. It’s suitable not only for Friday night out, but also as an everyday business look.

I would never limit specific hairstyles with specific face shapes. If a woman knows how to wear a curly hairstyle, then it doesn’t matter what kind of face shape she has.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

Just go for it! You can also wear this straight and sleek or just keep it curly and funky. It’s a hairstyle that is easy to maintain and  looks super cool.

Even though this is hairstyle easy to maintain, you still have to put a bit of an effort into it if you want to make it look good every day. Every morning, put a small amount of styling product for curls onto your wet palm and apply it to the lengths of your hair to refresh your curls. This way you will have flawless hairstyle every day!

Tight Curls

Q&A with Style Creator Andrea Neal-Thiesen

Owner @ Union Hair and Skin in Portland, Oregon

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a rounded mid-length cut with fringy edges. My favorite thing is the nice flow around the edges. I love the little bits of curl hanging down in some places around the perimeter.

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

For this client’s hair type, I used Deva Curl Decadence One Condition and Supercream to style and tame the frizz, but if your hair tends not to be too frizzy naturally I would use Deva’s Light Defining Gel in place of the Supercream. For second, third, fourth day curls, refresh with a spritz of water with some One Condition mixed into it and diffuse for a few minutes to get the curls back into their happy place.

What type of person would this look work best for?

This haircut is great for someone growing out their length and wanting something interesting to do with it as it gets longer. It also works well with any curl type and is really effective at keeping its shape as the hair grows out because of the back hugging in at the curve of the neck.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

Find a curl specialist so they know how to coax out those individual curls instead of breaking them up by texturizing too much or using a razor. If you find a good one, they should walk you through the styling process and make you feel comfortable about how this look would work for your individual face shape and lifestyle needs.

Free and Whimsical

Free and Whimsical hairstyleInstagram @taylored.cuts

Q&A with style creator, Taylor Way
Hairstylist & Deva Stylist @ Crop Hair Studio in Johnson City, TN

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this cut as free and whimsical. I love the way its unbound nature gives it a playful quirkiness, while the cut as a whole remains intentional and classy.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

DevaCurl, DevaCurl, DevaCurl! For this style, I cleansed with LowPoo Delight, conditioned to a slimy softness with One Condition, and styled with Wave Maker and Set It Free. Think moisture!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This client’s hair is medium in texture and thick in density. Her curls range from soft S-waves to Botticelli curls. The contrast of wave patterns within the cut makes for a natural, unbound, “I woke up like this” look. As a busy college student, low maintenance is a necessity for this curly girl and because of her thick hair and predisposition to migraines, the short and light structure is perfect. By cutting each curl without tension or disturbing its natural pattern (where it lives, the way it lives), this cut is Taylor-made (wink) especially for her curls and proves that we curly girls can ROCK short hair!

Shaggy Curls

short-brown-curly-hairInstagram / @whitmorrowhair

Q&A with Style Creator Whitney Morrow

Hairstylist

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This client came in with a grown out pixie. I really loved the shaggy curls along her hairline, so we kept it! I gave her a close cut nape with top heavy curls and carved out edges.

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

A sulfate-free shampoo is a must for keeping curls nourished enough not to frizz, as well as only halfway rinsing out your conditioner. While wet, I applied a marble-sized amount of AG Hair’s Molding Cream and set her under a hooded dryer. You can also air dry! Once dry, I raked my fingers through the hair, pushing it toward the face.

What type of person would this look work best for?

Having a natural curl is what makes this crop easily textured. Any face shape can wear this style if the stylist personalizes it to them. If the client has harsher features, leave the edges longer to soften to them. If the client has a longer face shape, keep the hair a little shorter on top.

This is a great look for brave, carefree girls that want a wash-and-go style.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

You can’t mess up the styling of this look. Just let the curls do what they want! Don’t over style it.

Thick & Curly

Q&A with Style Creator Malvina Hamamdjian
Cutting Apprentice @ Cowboys & Angels Salon in San Francisco, CA

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a pixie cut on thick and curly hair. My favorite thing about it is that it works with her natural texture so that it is easy for her to wear and style.

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

On this style we used a curl gloss by Oribe to add definition to her curls.

What type of person would this look work best for?

This look would work well on someone with wavy to curly hair who enjoys having short hair and does not want to spend a lot of time styling.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

This look will need to be maintained with cuts every six to eight weeks, so take into consideration frequent visits to the hair salon when choosing this style.

Bold Curls

Q&A with Style Creator Francesca Colvario
Hairstylist @ Clementine Hair Studio in Somerville, MA

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

Sam is fierce. She is confident and glamorous. This look is bold.

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

I would recommend moisturizing and sulfate-free products. Curls really need moisture! I really like Living Proof’s curl line and I think the Deva Curl products are great as well.

What type of person would this look work best for?

This look celebrates Sam’s curls. I think it’s great for people with curls who love their natural texture and don’t shy away from volume.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

Maintaining this style is all about keeping the integrity of the curls with the right products and by getting routine haircuts. If you are looking to achieve Sam’s color, I recommend root touch-ups every six to eight weeks.

Short & Natural

Q&A with Style Creator Sarah Frazier
Hairstylist @ John Edwards Salon and Day Spa in Bellevue, NE

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a short, naturally curly hairstyle. I love when people want to embrace their natural curls!

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

I recommend using the Deva Curl hair products,

What type of person would this look work best for?

This is a great cut and style for naturally curly hair clients that want a quick and easy morning routine.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

My best tip would be to find a Deva Curl certified stylist so they can give the client a Deva Curl haircut and explain how to use their products.

Carefree Curls

Carefree Curls hairstyleInstagram @layde_j

Q&A with style creator, Jaina Emerman
Hairstylist @ Jekyll & Hyde Salon in Columbus, OH

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is carefree, playful and low maintenance! My favorite thing is that it matches my personality so perfectly. I barely have to do anything to it to make it look good. It takes minimal effort and minimal time.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

The ONLY styling product I use is “This Is A Strong Hold Cream Gel” from Davines. I take a pea-sized amount, rub it in my hands, run my fingers through combed out wet hair, scrunch, and either let it air dry or diffuse depending on how much time I have. If your curls aren’t as perfect as you’d like them to be once the hair it fully dry, wrap a few of the top pieces around a curling wand for a more polished finish.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for clients with wavy to curly hair, oval-ish or longer face shapes, but most importantly, a personality to match. The wearer should be fun, low maintenance, and not mind looking a little tousled.

Curly Pomp

Q&A with style creator, Cherish Baser
Hairstylist @ Crystal Skull Studio in Ann Arbor, MI

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a soft curly pompadour. I undercut below the crown and left the top full and long to offer fullness and room for shrinkage.

What tips or products do you recommend to recreate this look?

At Crystal Skull Studio, we work with a local Michigan product line catered to curly texture called Original Moxie. I used their Everyday Leave In for moisture, the Just Gel for hold, and the Hair Bling to seal and separate. When working with curly hair, I recommend using something for moisture (a leave-in conditioner or a moisturizer), something for hold (gel, mousse or smoothing cream) and something to seal and shine (serum, oil or pomade).

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This is a great look for someone with multi-textured hair. If you have a looser curl underneath, it’s helpful to keep that shorter and let your curls fall over the top. It would also work wonderfully for someone who is looking for a strong shape that is low maintenance. This is the perfect look for a person who would like to simply apply product and head right out the door.

Color Pop

Color Pop hairstyleInstagram @aubstyles

Q&A with style creator, Aubree Miller
Master Stylist @ Salon Lucca in Lawrence, KS

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

My favorite thing about this look is how her natural curl pattern accentuates the pops of rosy red perfection, yet you aren’t losing the dimension of the dark pieces flowing through. She has a great profile and the shorter cut brings attention and elongates her neck to really complete this look!

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

Devacurl products are my go-to for naturally curly hair. Products that are sulfate, silicone and paraben-free matched with natural moisturizing agents help define and bring life to naturally curly hair. Here I used Devacurl No-poo to cleanse, Devacurl One Condition as the conditioner, and finished with Devacurl Supercream as my styling aid. I let her hair air dry most of the way and knocked out the rest of the moisture with my Devacurl Diffusor for added volume and texture.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I would recommend this look to anyone that doesn’t want to fuss with their hair on a daily basis. Since the color is balayaged handpainted, the grow out will be blended and minimal and her natural curl is perfect for a wash and go type look. I love that this curly girl is embracing a fun, short and whimsical do that is low maintenance and on trend!

Voluminous Curls

Voluminous Curls hairstyleInstagram @taisinha79

Q&A with style creator, Tais Bizin
Senior stylist @ Plane Jane Salon in Bethesda, MD

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

When I look at this short curly hair I think of body, motion, innovation, and an up-to-date style. My favorite thing about this look is that I went back to my basics to create the perfect style for this gorgeous lady. I created a 90 degree haircut following her head shape and added lots of texture. With just a little product to tame frizz and define her curls, she does not need much to achieve her end goal!

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I recommend a cream-based curl defining product to soften and tame the frizz, and a light volumizing mousse to keep the curls in place and add volume.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this style for people that want a fun, low maintenance and voluminous style. It is perfect for someone that doesn’t want to spend too much time styling their hair in the morning. People with a narrow face are ideal for this type of hair because it adds lots of volume around cheekbones, and even some height with the help of the right product.

Unkept Precision

Q&A with style creator, Tiziana Pendergrast
Master Stylist/Educator @ Bombshell Brazilian Waxing & Beauty Lounge in Richmond VA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is an unkept precision haircut. I like that you can still see the clear line of elevation. It’s easy to see those clear lines when the hair is straight, but sometimes layers get lost in curly hair!

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

For this look, I used Moroccan Oil Curl Control mousse and Moroccan Oil Curl Defining Cream. For extra body I used Moroccan Oil Dry Texture Spray.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is perfect for clients looking for a low maintenance look with wavy/curly hair, fine or thick hair, and an oval face shape.

Short Curly Bob

Short Curly Bob hairstyleInstagram @curllovemiriam

Q&A with style creator, Miriam McNamara
DevaCurl Stylist @ Curl Power Salon in Minneapolis, MN

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I LOVE this cut! My favorite thing about it is the balance of shortness and length that creates maximum curl expression within an incredibly stylish shape. The back of this short curly bob is so tapered that almost call it a cross between a pixie and a bob.

In the back, the hair is tightly tapered at the neck up to a fuller crown, leaving enough length on top for the curl to express itself. The longer curls around the face just barely brush the jawline, and a deep side part gives the look some sass and extra height on top.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

With the right products, this look is so easy to recreate! All curls, even a finer-textured curl like this, crave moisture to get proper definition and shine. I recommend a lightweight hydrating cleanser and conditioner, like DevaCurl Low Poo Delight and One Condition Delight.

After rinsing the conditioner, tip your head upside down and comb through your curls with your fingers to lift and separate. Then, scrunch in a product like DevaCurl Light Defining Gel for definition and hold, or spritz it with DevaCurl Curl Maker Spray Gel. Both products give awesome hold without weighing curls down.

Then all you have to do is squeeze out excess water using a microfiber towel and air dry! For curly girls with tighter and/or thicker curls, I recommend the same routine using products with more hold and moisture, such as DevaCurl No Poo, One Condition Original, and Ultra Defining Gel.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This cut is perfect for a curly client who wants maximum style with minimum daily effort. I have given this cut to curly girls with both tight and loose curls, as well as those with super fine to extra thick hair. It works great on all curl types!

This look also flatters all face shapes, although if a client has a wide jaw or weak chin, I would recommend leaving the length in front a bit longer to soften, while still making sure the fullest layers hit right around the brow and cheekbone. The shape of this cut requires regular maintenance. I recommend a trim every eight weeks to keep it from getting unkempt at the neck and weighed down on top.

Curly Shag

Q&A with style creator, Andrea Neal-Thiesen
Curl Specialist @ Gilded Fox in Portland, OR

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this cut as a curly shag with a fringe. My favorite thing about this look is the layering. So many curly girls are afraid of layers and bangs, but they totally work to create shape and movement.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I used the Deva Curl Decadence One Condition and Super Cream to style this look. Her hair type needs all the moisture it can get!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is flattering for clients with any face shape except for oval as it would lengthen the face too much. It works on any curl type and does require some styling because of the fringe, so it’s not for the completely low maintenance client.

Spring Delight

Q&A with style creator, Russell Costales
Hairstylist @ Gilded Fox in Portland, OR

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I call this look “Spring Delight”. My favorite thing is how the colors are woven together to create dimension and enhance the curls.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

Less is best. Use a color-safe, sulfate-free shampoo as little as possible. There is no need to shampoo every time you wet your hair, try every other time instead. For this look, I used the Innersense Organic Beauty Color Awakening Hairbath and Conditioner and styled with the Innersense Curl Control Cream.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This color is recommended for the child who survived, and someone who has the time and money for lots of maintenance as it needs to be colored about once per month to stay looking fresh. Embrace your inner unicorn!

Glunge Effect Bob

Grunge Effect Bob hairstyleInstagram @taoofhair

Q&A with style creator, Romain Lambert a.k.a Kawada
Senior Stylist / Colorist @ Tao of Hair in Perth, WA Australia

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I love the glunge effect of this look as a result of the smokey roots under the highlights. It really adds depth and character. I created a further contrast with an elevation haircut to define the bounce of the curl against the sharp line of the bob. The combination of strength and tenderness is what I like most about this look.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

Providing choices to our clients is important. For the woman just starting to try professional salon products or wanting a quality product without breaking the bank, I recommend the Keune range. I especially recommend the Care Curl Control Conditioner and Care Curl Control Defining Cream.

For those wanting to indulge in luxe hair care, the curl range of Oribe delivers in trend, quality, aesthetics and fragrance. You’ll get a great result by mixing the Curl Control Silkening Crème and the Curl Gloss Hydration & Hold.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is for a dynamic modern woman that embraces her natural hair. The cut and style suits all face types. When curly hair is well managed with the right cut and use of product, stylish and elegant curls can be achieved daily with minimum effort. The darker roots reduce regrowth maintenance and suit women with an outgoing, busy lifestyle.

Foxy Undercut

Q&A with style creator, Gypsy Kiss Sturgeon
Senior Hair Artist @ Citrus Hair Salon in Yaletown, Vancouver, B.C.

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I call this look “sassy foxy roxy”. It is a customized asymmetrical and detailed undercut. My favorite thing about it is its versatility due to the undercut and the customized sideburn curl on the right side.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I recommend using Kevin Murphy’s Smooth Again Wash shampoo and finishing with the Smooth Again Rinse conditioner, followed by Davines’ Oi All In One Milk and also Kevin Murphy’s Killer Curls Creme scrunched in and then diffused to the desired volume. Using a 1/2 inch wand, spot create some perfectly unruly curls. To finish, scrunch in and perfect with a cocktail of a small amount of Kevin Murphy’s Un.Dressed fibre paste and Davines’ This Is An Oil Non Oil. Use the Un.Dressed alone to perfect the sideburn piece as desired.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this cut to someone that has thick and curly hair that enjoys a slightly more edgy and versatile look. This look is also for someone who is able to execute a four to six week haircut maintenance regime.

Piecey Pixie

Piecey Pixie hairstyleInstagram @hairapy101

Q&A with style creator, Alessandra Saman
Hairstylist @ Meche Salon in Beverly Hills, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as a sexy, piecey, curly pixie! My favorite thing about this look is the soft feminine pieces that frame the face, as well as the chunks of curls that free flow around the head.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I recommend using a light styling cream that you apply when the hair is wet. You can let the hair dry naturally, or defuse with your fingertips.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is great for wavy or curly textured hair. With straight hair or fine textures, you would have to add texture using a shear to separate. Thick hair could work as well, but the stylist would have to remove lots of weight for separation.

Any face shape would work with this look. You would determine the appropriate length from looking at the face shape. This length can be short or long. This is an easy, low maintenance, wash and go look fort all ages! It looks great with pops of highlights to show off the pieces as well.

Layered Bob

Q&A with style creator, Jennifer Freesia
Hairstylist & Manager @ Mio Spa & Salon in Oakland, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a layered curly bob. I used the DevaCutting method to create this haircut. This look is great because it’s a wash, apply product, and go kind of cut.
What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?
Mousses, creams and gels are great styling products for curly hair. I used all DevaCurl products on this client. DevaCurl products are very hydrating which is very important for curly hair. I cleansed her hair with No-Poo Original conditioning cleanser, conditioned with One Condition Original, and styled using the Deva styling method.

I applied Styling Cream to soaking wet hair and finger combed it while distributing the product. I added the Ultra Defining Gel and scrunched to coax the curl and remove excess water. I then towel blotted with a microfiber towel and put her under the hood dryer to mimic air drying. After they hair was dry, I scrunched and massaged the root to add a little volume.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?
This haircut is great for most face shapes, especially oval, oblong and triangular. It is not best for round or inverted triangle shaped faces. This is also great cut for a wide rage of hair types from straight to extremely curly, but the look will differ between hair types. This cut is perfect if you want your hair out of your face, but don’t like having to tie it back. Just know that with short haircuts, you do need to get a cut more often to maintain the layers and length.

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a pixie tailored to my client’s natural curl. I love that it works with her own texture and really opens up her face.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I recommend Devacurl Beautiful Mess as a styler for this look if clients want more volume and texture. Or, use Arc Angel gel for a smaller look with more definition. Clients can also use both for something in between.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

Clients will need to be okay with frequent haircuts, at least once a month if not more, depending on how fast their hair grows. This pixie us great for clients with swavy, wavy and curly hair. Day to day, this is a very easygoing style. The look is great for the client on the go who doesn’t want to do a lot every day. This can be a lovely contrast to very feminine face shapes or styles.

How would you describe this look and what is your favourite thing about it?

What can I say about this look…I love it!!! First, I cut the hair just above the shoulders to really bring out the lovely shape of her neck and shoulders, which are really feminine and beautiful parts of the body. I cut the ends of the hair blunt and added internal texture it give the curl more strength and definition. This is a really fresh and modern way to enhance your curls so they look healthy and bouncy.

What products do you recommend to recommend?

Hydration, hydration, hydration! Curls need more moisture and hydration, so the least you do to them, the better. I love using Motion Lotion by Kevin Murphy mixed in with Smooth Again anti-frizz or Leave in Repair treatment. Once out of the shower, don’t brush your hair. Leave it wet and apply the product. Gently take a bit of moisture out at a time with your towel then just leave it to dry naturally.

What type of clients would you recommend this look for?

I would really recommend this haircut for clients that want to enhance and define their healthy, natural curl!

With curls, I think patience is the key. By letting the curl dry naturally using your hydrating and curl defining products, you’re not adding heat which can dry out and damage your hair.

This look is great for all face shapes. By cutting texture internally and altering the baseline, you can alter the movement and softness in the right areas and still keep that beautiful shape. So whether you have thick or thin curls, I really think this haircut can be tailored for you.

Always keeping in mind that the frizzier and the thicker the hair, the more moisture the curls need.
