Naturally Defined Curls

Q&A with style creator, Jo Gray
Curl Specialist @ Neellovescurls in Melbourne, Australia

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

These are just below shoulder-length, natural, hydrated, soft curls with volume at the roots. My favorite thing about this look is that I am working with what is already there. Rather than using heat and irons to create a forced curl, this is purely working with my client’s natural curl pattern to give the awesome result of evenly distributed volume and naturally defined curls.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To maintain and recreate a look like this, it is essential to use products that do not contain silicones or sulfates. Water soluble products ensure the hairs ability to absorb water, which means curls stay soft and frizz-free.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for someone with medium density, non-colored ,naturally curly hair. It suits a range of face shapes, working best with heart, square and oval shapes. The length is easy to keep as long as the client keeps up with moisturizing and styling procedures roughly two times a week.

This style would suit anyone who likes a bit of length and has the time and understanding of working with their curls to keep the look fresh and hydrated.

Frizz-Free Curls

Q&A with style creator, Bella Frada
Stylist @ Chatters Hyland Centre in London, ON Canada

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

My favorite thing about this look is how it all begins with a conversation between the stylist and the client. Speaking to the clients about their curls and their experience and taking the time to understand their specific curl needs is so important. This conversation is what leads to educating clients on how to take their natural waves or curls and turning them into something amazing and frizz-free. It teaches them how to fall in love their curls again!

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

My favorite products to use to recreate this look are products from DevaCurl. Deva Curl is 100% sulfate, silicone, and paraben-free. It’s important to educate clients on how to say goodbye to the shampoo and conditioner that they are using at home. Most of these products will contain harsh chemicals that tend to dry out curls, making them to look frizzy.

The DevaCurl line has specific needs for all curl types. Every product consists of a special blend specifically formulated to address the needs of hydration, strength, nourishment and shine. When I see a curly girl for the first time, most of that time is spent teaching them how to properly use the products at home. When they start using the right products, they can instantly see the results even. Most people really appreciate that I took the time for them!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

About 65% of the population has wavy/curly hair. It’s all in how we are willing to embrace our natural curl and its uniqueness.

All curl patterns are different, even on the same person. A curly girl haircut should always be done dry, not wet. When we cut dry we can visually see the curls and create a look that is customizable for each person.

The Lioness

Q&A with style creator, Dianne Nola
Certified DevaCurl Stylist @ Nola Studio in San Francisco, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I call this look “The High Priestess” or “The Lioness.” Essentially, it is a long layered haircut on extremely thick and long 3C hair. It commands attention.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I use Innersense Organic Beauty products made locally in Walnut Creek, California. Here we used their Hydrating Cream Hairbath, Hydrating Cream Conditioner, Inner Peace Whipped Cream Texturizer and I Create Hold Gel.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

An oval face would wear this style best because it emphasizes length and fullness. With any other face shape, it might look too extreme.

I recommend this look for someone who enjoys their femininity, their sensuality, and being in the limelight. Most importantly, it is ideal for a woman who has an excellent posture. That’s the difference in looking sloppy or magnificent!

Waterfall Cut

Q&A with style creator, Rosie Jablonsky
Founder @ Curl Power Salon in Minneapolis, MN

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This gently layered waterfall cut iwas achieved by sculpting her curls to cascade away from her face with a soft, even shape. She was concerned about not losing any length, so I cleaned up all of her ends and created a shape that allows for her generous natural volume to expand and look luscious in between wash days.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I used a combination of DevaCurl products and UpNorthNaturals for this look. Her hair needs a lot of moisture, so we used the DevaCurl Decadence NoPoo and One Condition as a cleanser and conditioner. I added DevaCurl Heaven In Hair Deep Conditioner to add extra hydration and thickness to my formula.

We rinsed the conditioner over halfway out after a thorough finger detangling and curl clustering session. The leave-in stylers I recommend are Up North Naturals’ Hair Milk followed by 8 Oil Defining Gelly. Once dry, I spritzed on DevaCurl Set It Free for moisture lock and shine.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This shape translates beautifully to wavy hair, medium curly, and the looser end of the super curly spectrum..  Gentle shaping that works to define your texture and eliminate bulk is flattering on all long hair.

This look is great for this client because she has an active lifestyle and needs to be able to put her hair up and out of her face a lot of the time, but wants her curls to look stunning when she wears her hair down. I think we nailed it!

Lived-In Curls

Q&A with style creator, DaShell Isaac
Advanced Deva Stylist & Educator @ House: Textured in Las Vegas, NV

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would consider this to be lived-in, kind of bohemian look. It is beachy and tousled.

My favorite thing about it is that it is casual and relaxed. A structured chaos, per se. Although it looks effortless, her curls needed a bit of encouragement to form fully. Think of the “natural look” when it comes to make-up. Although there’s not a lot of color on the palette, we know that a lot of work went into it to look “natural”.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I am a DevaCurl stylist so that is the product line that I use. For this particular person, we used the DevaCurl  LowPoo Delight and Delight One Conditioner for wavy hair. We then styled with DevaCurl Wave Maker which is an airy, whip-like cream for definition, as well as the Frizz Free Volume Foam for volume. We applied each product section by section, scrunching it in as we went along.

We used clips at the roots to create volume and to hold her bangs in place, then set her under a hooded dryer.  We removed most of the moisture first, then diffused from the inside of the crown to keep the volume at the roots before finishing the ends.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this particular haircut for all face shapes, but especially a longer face shape because of the fringe.  Wearing something across the forehead helps shorten a longer face. Oblong faces typically don’t look as pleasing with long hair, and this face shape is where the sides are significantly longer than the width of the face. Opposite of that, I would omit the fringe if you have a small or square shaped face. One’s facial features would get lost in all of the hair and bangs.

This would also work well for the client who likes to let their hair air dry and have more of a tousled, unfinished look. I would consider other options if your type of wave is less than what this client has. You would have to work pretty hard to get it to look so uniform.

This haircut and design looks the best if there is a little bit of elevation and layers created throughout the shape to give movement all the way through.
