California Long Curly Hair

Curlifornia Waves hairstyleInstagram @curlyhairdaze

Q&A with style creator, Daisy Henson
Certified DevaCurl Stylist @ Studio V Salon in San Diego, CA

How would you describe this look?

I call this look “Curlifornia Waves”. It is also known as a waterfall cut.

My favorite thing about this look is that it’s a sexy, tousled, and carefree look with lots of volume. The shorter layers allow the hair to dry faster and give a lot of volume without sacrificing the length that many girls crave.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is great for a range of face shapes and works well parted down the middle or the side. It suits wavy or curly girls with shoulder length hair who want movement and shape.

I used DevaCurl products. I started with BuildUp Buster, which is a deep cleanser, to remove buildup from past products. This gave her wavy curls life and bounce. A buildup remover is important to achieve maximum volume. Certain products, as well as the environment, can weigh the hair down and make it impossible to get the volume I achieved with this look.

Next, I used One Condition Original and left a bit in for moisture. I then used Styling Cream and Light Defining Gel to define her wavy curls. I towel dried with a microfiber towel to reduce frizz and then diffused. Voila! Curlifornia Waves!

Lived-In Definition

Q&A with style creator, Natalia Rodriguez
Curly Hair Expert @ Hairitage Hair Lounge in Somerville, NJ

How would you describe this look?

I would define this look as “lived-in definition”. This is one of my signature looks for clients that love a low maintenance style with curls. It doesn’t complicate their hair routine with tons of products.

My favorite thing about this look is that not every curl is the same. That’s what makes naturally curly hair one-of-a-kind!

Any advice for someone considering it?

When it comes to this look, less is more. The curls will curl, all they really need is water. Water is key to achieve frizz-free, shiny and defined curls. While the hair is soaking wet, I apply a light hold gel. I then scrunch out excess water with a cotton t-shirt and diffuse hair until 80% dry.

This look is perfect for those who need a hair routine that isn’t complicated and wants their natural texture to existing effortlessly. I always tell my curly clients that you wear the hair, the hair doesn’t wear you. It’s all about how you rock it!

Sunkissed Curly Hairstyle

Q&A with style creator, Kristeena Van Cleave
Hair Artist & Expert Colorist @ Rebel’tude Salon and Spa in Gig Harbor, WA

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as “Sunkissed Deva”. I used the Deva Curl cutting technique and products to create this look, including the Light Defining Gel and Frizz-Free Foam.

For the highlights, I did a face-framing micro foil with Kevin.Murphy lightener, then toned with Color.Me 6.7 to add a brightening sunkissed highlight around her face.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Anyone seeking this look should give in to their natural curl and start using Deva Curl products and getting Deva cuts!

Edgy Disconnected Curls

Elegant Yet Edgy Curls hairstyleInstagram @ash.paul.hair

Q&A with style creator, Ash Goergen
Curly Hairstylist @ Curl Power Salon in Minneapolis, MN

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as an elegant yet edgy way of styling natural curls. My favorite thing about the look is the way her natural waves flow together.

Any advice for someone considering it?

As for advice for someone considering a similar look, I would say that undercuts can have an awkward grow-out process. That should be considered before cutting. If you can rock the look with confidence, I say go for it!

Natural Textured Waves

Q&A with style creator, Analise Mendez
Stylist / Artist @ Rebel’tude Salon & Spa in Gig Harbor, WA

How would you describe this look?

These are natural textured waves! What I love most about this look is that it really enhances her natural curly locks and gives her that “fresh off the beach” look.

Any advice for someone considering it?

My best advice for someone considering this look would be to not be afraid of too much product! Rake through your curls while you have conditioner in it to get any tangles out. Always use a microfiber towel when drying your hair because it reduces frizz. And for the best results, use a diffuser with your blow dryer and a styling foam/mousse that will leave you with touchable curls and volume.

Some of my favorite products for this look are the DEVA CURL Frizz Free Volumizing Foam and the Light Defining Gel. This is a super easy way to style your hair without spending so much time in the morning before work!

Effortless Curly Haircut

Q&A with style creator, Melissa
Hairstylist & Salon Owner @ City Curl Studio in Staten Island, NY

How would you describe this look?

This look is easy day-to-day wear. All of the layering gives effortless shape.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Cutting shorter pieces allows the hair to dryer faster and requires less product.

If you’re looking to keep your locks but want to update your style, adding some layers will spruce up your look.

Naturally Defined Curls for Thin Hair

Naturally Defined Curls hairstyleInstagram @jocurlystylist

Q&A with style creator, Jo Gray
Curl Specialist @ Neellovescurls in Melbourne, Australia

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

These are just below shoulder-length, natural, hydrated, soft curls with volume at the roots. My favorite thing about this look is that I am working with what is already there. Rather than using heat and irons to create a forced curl, this is purely working with my client’s natural curl pattern to give the awesome result of evenly distributed volume and naturally defined curls.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To maintain and recreate a look like this, it is essential to use products that do not contain silicones or sulfates. Water-soluble products ensure the hairs’ ability to absorb water, which means curls stay soft and frizz-free.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for someone with medium density, non-colored, naturally curly hair. It suits a range of face shapes, working best with heart, square and oval shapes. The length is easy to keep if the client keeps up with moisturizing and styling procedures roughly two times a week.

This style would suit anyone who likes a bit of length and has the time and understanding of working with their curls to keep the look fresh and hydrated.

Frizz-Free Light Curly Hair

Frizz-Free Curls hairstyleInstagram @bellachatshair

Q&A with style creator, Bella Frada
Stylist @ Chatters Hyland Centre in London, ON Canada

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

My favorite thing about this look is how it all begins with a conversation between the stylist and the client. Speaking to the clients about their curls and their experience and taking the time to understand their specific curl needs is so important. This conversation is what leads to educating clients on how to take their natural waves or curls and turning them into something amazing and frizz-free. It teaches them how to fall in love their curls again!

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

My favorite products to use to recreate this look are products from DevaCurl. Deva Curl is 100% sulfate, silicone, and paraben-free. It’s important to educate clients on how to say goodbye to the shampoo and conditioner that they are using at home. Most of these products will contain harsh chemicals that tend to dry out curls, making them to look frizzy.

The DevaCurl line has specific needs for all curl types. Every product consists of a special blend specifically formulated to address the needs of hydration, strength, nourishment and shine. When I see a curly girl for the first time, most of that time is spent teaching them how to properly use the products at home. When they start using the right products, they can instantly see the results even. Most people really appreciate that I took the time for them!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

About 65% of the population has wavy/curly hair. It’s all in how we are willing to embrace our natural curl and its uniqueness.

All curl patterns are different, even on the same person. A curly girl haircut should always be done dry, not wet. When we cut dry we can visually see the curls and create a look that is customizable for each person.

Naturally Kinky Hair

The Lioness hairstyleInstagram @nolastudio

Q&A with style creator, Dianne Nola
Certified DevaCurl Stylist @ Nola Studio in San Francisco, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I call this look “The High Priestess” or “The Lioness.” Essentially, it is a long layered haircut on extremely thick hair. It commands attention.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I use Innersense Organic Beauty products made locally in Walnut Creek, California. Here we used their Hydrating Cream Hairbath, Hydrating Cream Conditioner, Inner Peace Whipped Cream Texturizer and I Create Hold Gel.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

An oval face would wear this style best because it emphasizes length and fullness. With any other face shape, it might look too extreme.

I recommend this look for someone who enjoys their femininity, their sensuality, and being in the limelight. Most importantly, it is ideal for a woman who has an excellent posture. That’s the difference in looking sloppy or magnificent!

Waterfall Curls

Waterfall Cut hairstyleInstagram @rosiecurl

Q&A with style creator, Rosie Jablonsky
Founder @ Curl Power Salon in Minneapolis, MN

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This gently layered waterfall cut iwas achieved by sculpting her curls to cascade away from her face with a soft, even shape. She was concerned about not losing any length, so I cleaned up all of her ends and created a shape that allows for her generous natural volume to expand and look luscious in between wash days.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I used a combination of DevaCurl products and UpNorthNaturals for this look. Her hair needs a lot of moisture, so we used the DevaCurl Decadence NoPoo and One Condition as a cleanser and conditioner. I added DevaCurl Heaven In Hair Deep Conditioner to add extra hydration and thickness to my formula.

We rinsed the conditioner over halfway out after a thorough finger detangling and curl clustering session. The leave-in stylers I recommend are Up North Naturals’ Hair Milk followed by 8 Oil Defining Gelly. Once dry, I spritzed on DevaCurl Set It Free for moisture lock and shine.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This shape translates beautifully to wavy hair, medium curly, and the looser end of the super curly spectrum.. Gentle shaping that works to define your texture and eliminate bulk is flattering on longer hair.

This look is great for this client because she has an active lifestyle and needs to be able to put her hair up and out of her face a lot of the time, but wants her curls to look stunning when she wears her hair down. I think we nailed it!

Layered Long Curly

Q&A with style creator, DaShell Isaac
Advanced Deva Stylist & Educator @ House: Textured in Las Vegas, NV

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would consider this to be lived-in, kind of bohemian look. It is beachy and tousled.

My favorite thing about it is that it is casual and relaxed. A structured chaos, per se. Although it looks effortless, her curls needed a bit of encouragement to form fully. Think of the “natural look” when it comes to make-up. Although there’s not a lot of color on the palette, we know that a lot of work went into it to look “natural”.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I am a DevaCurl stylist so that is the product line that I use. For this particular person, we used the DevaCurl LowPoo Delight and Delight One Conditioner for wavy hair. We then styled with DevaCurl Wave Maker which is an airy, whip-like cream for definition, as well as the Frizz Free Volume Foam for volume. We applied each product section by section, scrunching it in as we went along.

We used clips at the roots to create volume and to hold her bangs in place, then set her under a hooded dryer. We removed most of the moisture first, then diffused from the inside of the crown to keep the volume at the roots before finishing the ends.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this particular haircut for all face shapes, but especially a longer face shape because of the fringe. Wearing something across the forehead helps shorten a longer face. Oblong faces typically don’t look as pleasing with longer hair, and this face shape is where the sides are significantly longer than the width of the face. Opposite of that, I would omit the fringe if you have a small or square shaped face. One’s facial features would get lost in all of the hair and bangs.

This would also work well for the client who likes to let their hair air dry and have more of a tousled, unfinished look. I would consider other options if your type of wave is less than what this client has. You would have to work pretty hard to get it to look so uniform.

This haircut and design looks the best if there is a little bit of elevation and layers created throughout the shape to give movement all the way through.
