Semi Permanent Hair Color Guide
What exactly is semi-permanent hair color? Semi-permanent hair color is color that is temporary. It is designed to coat the hair shaft instead of penetrating it like permanent hair color. It can also be referred to as a rinse, a color stain, a wash or a glaze. What this color does is coat your hair with a non-peroxide based color that can last 4-6 weeks (on average).
What are the perks to using a semi-permanent color? If you have some gray hairs, the color will start to fade while your hair is growing out, giving you a more natural look when it’s time to recolor as opposed to the solid line you get with a permanent color. Another perk to using this type of a product is that you get added shine! Because the semi-permanent color isn’t removing any color or pigment from your hair (it’s only depositing pigment), it’s actually a much healthier way to color your hair. Colors that lighten the hair go in with the peroxide (or other type of chemical agent designed for this purpose) and remove your hairs natural pigments, then they deposit their own. Once the color is in the hair shaft, it packs down in to become more permanent. A semi-permanent color uses a processing liquid to make it active, but it’s only coating the hair and not removing any of your natural pigments. It’s also not damaging your hair shafts cuticle layer by breaking through to eat the pigment. This is why it’s a healthier choice for your hair.
Another upside to semi-permanent color – you can use them to create fun bright or bold streaks throughout your hair. If you are in the mood for something totally out there, you can usually find the color in a semi-permanent form. Keep in mind that if you are using these vibrant colors on prelightened hair, they may stain the hair. Once the overall color fades, there may be a tint to the hair that won’t come out. Try doing a test swatch on a piece of hair cut from an inconspicuous place or a chunk of hair from your haircut. This will help you determine if you want to use the color or not.
The downside to a semi-permanent color is that they won’t lighten your hair color. If you are a brunette looking to be a blonde, you can’t achieve that look using this product. They can be used, however, to tone your hair once it’s been lightened if your hair color turns out wrong. It also won’t cover gray 100% without fading. If you want solid coverage you have to go permanent.
