Paneling
What is paneling? It depends on if you are looking for hair color or a haircut. We’ll talk about the color first, then the haircut.
Paneling as a color technique: If you ask your stylist to do paneling with color, they will take a block section of hair or “panel” and apply color to it on a foil in thin layers. The variety of panel sizes and shapes is endless and is determined by your cut, personal style and the effect you want to achieve. You can also have several panels put in at one time. You have to be careful that you don’t have too many done at once, though, or your hair will just look messy. For a clean look, your stylist should section out your hair in very clean lines and take special care when rinsing the color from your hair so it doesn’t “bleed” into the rest of your hair.
Who can have paneling done? Anyone who wants fun contrast and depth put into their hair. Your lightness or darkness will help the stylist choose a color best suited to you, but anyone should be able to get this done at their salon. Your stylist may call it something else like “fashion colors,” “shading,” or “creative coloring.” The most common area to add this in is the bang area and also the crown.
Paneling as a haircutting technique: The concept is that hair is layered in a reverse manner. So instead of taking more length off the top of the section to be cut, the stylist takes more hair from underneath. The effect this has on your style is that it gives you a lightness and movement while keeping a creative edge to your haircut. When done in precise sections, it gives you a panel effect. This is where the term comes in. It also allows you to take your fun contemporary style, comb it in the opposite direction, and have it look more traditional. It works best on medium length hair.

| This is a perfect example of how paneling is used to apply color to hair. It is easy to see that the blue, purple, and red hair color is applied to different sections of hair much like a panel. This technique separates the color more to let it stand out on the base color which is why it is a fantastic way to get creative hair color. |
This hair cut uses the paneling technique to cut underneath and give the hair a lift and allows for movement. The curls really stand out because of the way the hair is cut and styled upwards. |
