How to Copy Rihanna’s Super Fiery Red-Hot Locks

Oh, Rihanna. How can I not help but sing this fabulous lady’s praises? She’s a beautiful woman of true talent, indeed, and comes with a head of hair so brilliant that women ’round the world can’t help but be inspired. In fact, when she walked out the doors with the fiery mane pictured here, it sent ladies into a frenzied search for the exact same dye.

“It was such a big hit because it worked for her and she wore it well,” notes L’Oréal Professionnel Artist Jay Vosper. “What I love about the color, and something that is most important to me, is that it looks healthy and shiny.”

While this color isn’t for everyone and shouldn’t be attempted with at-home dyes, I applaud any lady who wants to — and successfully — pulls this killer hair color off. With Vosper’s help, I’m here to tell you how you, too, can rock fiery red tendrils a la Rihanna.

Step 1: Consultation

“Leave it to the experts to get [this color] right,” says Vosper, who recommends booking a consultation with a color specialist. “Bring in photos of the desired look and be prepared to answer questions in the consultation around your hair history, hair maintenance, and commitment to the new color so you both can create a plan of action.”

Step 2: Prep Your Locks

Even if you’ve got decently healthy hair, you can always take steps to make it healthier. This is particularly important before a big dye job, notes Vosper. “I always suggest doing treatments — such as L’Oréal Professionnel In-Salon Mythic Oil Treatment, L’Oréal Professionnel Fiberceutic Treatment or in-salon Power Doses — to build up strength, protein, and moisture depending on the primary concern of the hair,” he says.

Step 3: Dye at the Salon

This one’s easy enough! Head to the salon, dye your hair and walk out the door sporting hair so vibrant you’ll feel like a real-life cover of Vogue. Whatever you do, though, don’t try this one at home.

“In order to get the perfect red, such as Rihanna’s, a professional colorist will have to do a hair analysis and maybe even a test strand, and then customize the formula based on the client’s natural hair color/existing hair color and desired hair color. What might have initially cost $10 for the box of color will end up being even more money to get it fixed than if you had gone to a salon in the first place.”

Step 4: Manage and Nourish

Hair that goes through a major change should be pampered. “I recommend an at-home hair maintenance treatment.  My current favorite products for my clients are L’Oréal Professionnel INOAColor Care Sulfate–Free Shampoo, Conditioner, and Masque. This provides five times more nutrition to extend the intensity and shine of INOA-Color results. Another favorite is Mythic Oil Haircare Regimen (Nourishing Shampoo, Conditioner, Masque), which intensely nourishes hair, resulting in hair with luminous shine that feels soft to the touch.”
