A playful (and decidedly less stiff) version of the ballerina bun, top knots are quickly becoming a tried and true fave amongst Hollywood A-listers, including our girl Julianne Hough (duh!). The top knot is an updo that can take you through your work day and on into the night, according to hairstylist to the stars, Frank Barbosa. “What I like most about this look is its soft elegance and its versatility. It is definitely a new classic,” he says. “This style works beautifully on Julianne, thanks in part to her perfect heart shaped face. It adds balance and shows off all her best features, her winning smile being one of them.” Um, we couldn’t agree more!
For your own “over the top” top knot, simply follow Frank’s four-step Julianne Hough hair tutorial below:
Step 1: First and foremost, you want to achieve texture and shine. To do this, begin by spraying the root area of your hair with IT&LY’s Pure Texture. Then, from the mid length to the ends of your hair, use IT&LY’s Pure Water Drops for extra shine and hydration.
Step 2: Next, use a flat iron or medium 1-inch curling wand to curl your hair, making sure to leave the ends out. “My all time faves are the Sultra Irons, as they seal in shine while creating the texture you need,” notes Frank. Once you’re done curling, break up the waves by running your fingers through your hair.
Step 3: Now, gather your hair up on the top of your head and secure your pony by twisting a band the same color as your tresses around it. Do not pull the pony through the last band however, and instead start using bobby pins to secure the different pieces into shape.
Step 4: With a chopstick or tail comb, lift the hair around your hairline to soften the look. Then spray lightly with hairspray for a flexible hold, and you’re all done.
