Recreate It: Carrie Underwood’s Dramatic Side Part With Carefree Curls

We still can’t get over how gorgeous country crooner Carrie Underwood looked at last year’s American Music Awards! Can you!? Not only was her face flawless, but her blonde curls also complimented her purple gown perfectly. Her hair was polished, yet carefree at the same time, allowing her sequin-embellished Abed Mahfouz dress to really take center stage and shine.

To recreate the look at home, we turned to Oscar award winning celebrity hairstylist and creator of Mitch Stone Essentials, Mitch Stone, to give us the lowdown. Here’s what he had to say:

“Carrie’s hair works because it is soft and natural looking. Her hair looks appropriate for the red carpet or a less formal event. The deep side part is dramatic and polished, while the waves add a natural sexiness.”

How to Recreate Carrie’s Style:

Step 1: To get the look, Mitch advises first applying Mitch Stone Essentials Texture Spray to damp hair. It’s the ideal solution for fine, limp locks in need of extra volume, texture and dimension. Plus, it provides a lightweight, flexible hold that’s anything but stiff.

Step 2: Flip your head over next, and scrunch your strands, he says. Then air-dry them.

Step 3: Once your hair is dry, comb your bangs into a deep side part like Carrie’s, and apply a smoothing serum, such as TIGI Bed Head After Party, recommends Mitch. Squeeze a dime size amount into the palms of your hands, and smooth onto hair. This will help tame any flyaways and control frizz for a fabulously fresh look. Don’t forget to tuck your hair behind your ears too. Use a bobby pin or two to hold it in place if need be.

Step 4: Last but not least, to add a bit more definition to your waves, curl random pieces loosely with a 2-inch barrel iron for a natural look and keep the ends straight. Finish up with a great shine spray like Giovanni Eco Chic Cosmetics Shine of the Times, and you’re ready to hit the town in style.
