With the tapered version, you can change the diameter of the curl depending on the way you wrap the hair around the iron. Straight barrels will give you the same diameter from top to bottom.
To get a curl like Elle Fanning blow dry hair smooth, then wrap hair from middle through ends around the curl rod. Only hold it for a second before letting go, then brush through the curls to soften them up and run your fingers through them for some separation. To get a wavier look instead of curly, roll hair horizontally instead of vertically.
