Electrolysis for permanent hair removal
Electrolysis has been a readily available option for permanent hair removal. Energy is distributed with a hair thin probe into the hair
follicle and down to the inner part of the hair that is responsible for growth. Once the hair is destroyed it does not regrow. Although
0% regrowth is not guaranteed, permanent hair removal is possible if done correctly. Many home units are now available for those who are
very tedious and careful because electrolysis does require great attention and can cause skin damage.
Lasers for permanent hair reduction
Laser hair removal consists of using energy produced by specific lasers in the process of photothermolysis. The laser is directed at
the hair follicles and heat produced is centered to darkest areas, which is usually where hair growth and regrowth start, thus
destroying the hairs at their roots. Not everyone can meet the criteria for laser hair removal. People with hair that is significantly darker
that their skin color are preferred candidates. Blonde, gray, and red hairs are not good candidates, as they do not absorb the laser energy well.
Skin that is too dark will absorb too much laser energy and are also not good candidates. Side effects include blistering and skin pigmentation.
Remember lasers are not considered permanent hair removal yet.
IPL(intense pulsed light) for permanent hair reduction
Intense Pulsed Light, a trademark of Lumenis, uses high intensity of light power produced in quick millisecond pulses controlled by computers
and filtered by special filters. The light energy is directed to the hair follicle and directed to the main resources for hair growth where
it destroys the hairs. This technique can be applied to a broader area range as well but side effects include slight bleeding, skin pigmentation,
and blistering. There are different lasers that may be more effective for different skin types.
