Ashley Riddle, a top hairstylist based in Baltimore, shares some of her favorite tips:
1. Use a softening shampoo and conditioner
By using a product that will coat the outer layer of each hair strand, it will help keep frizz down. One of our favorites is Redken All Soft. After shampooing and conditioning, instead of abrasively drying hair by rubbing the towel with your hands back and forth, we advise our clients to carefully blot the hair with a towel to remove excess water.
2. Apply a leave-in conditioner
A lightweight mist of It’s a Ten! is one of our favorite leave-ins to use. This works with all hair types and is super nourishing to even the most damaged of hair.
3. Blow hair out in sections
Blowing hair out in sections with an ionic dryer and a round brush will help keep the hair tangle free. Starting with the bottom section, take 2 inch sections to the top. Use a clip to hold the wet hair up. If you have bangs, don’t let them dry and be sure to style them prior to the rest of the head.
4. Be picky about styling products
After your hair is completely dry, if you are looking for sexy loose waves, take a 1-inch barrel iron and curl vertical sections. Apply a working hairspray (not a finishing hairspray) prior to curling your hair and then again after you have completed each section. Our favorite working spray is Sebastian Shaper.
5. Finish with a shine spray or oil based product
Aquage Shine Spray or Moroccan Oil both work great. With both of these products, a little goes a long way. By following these steps and using the correct products, your perfectly soft hairstyle will not only last, but will be perfectly touchable as well.
Joey Noufal, owner of Noufal HaircolorStudio in Vienna, Virginia (just outside of Washington, DC) is an international expert hairstylist with more than 27 years of experience in the US, Europe and his native country of Lebanon. Here’s what he has to say about how to get soft hair this winter and all year round…
“This year, soft, natural looks are all the rage. Big soft curls can be irresistibly flirty while still giving you that natural look that captures your true beauty. In our salon, to give our clients that ‘touch-me’ hair look, we use Kitoko Oil. It’s full of essential nutrients and extracts and the great thing is that you only need a dime size portion. J Beverly Hills Masque Conditioner is another great product that helps protect the hair throughout the winter months from drastic temperature changes as well as the dryness that can be caused by home heating systems. To that end, when attempting to achieve a soft or sleek look, medium to light holding hairspray works great to keep the hair lightweight and not overly stiff.”
