Hair Graduation
Graduation is what your stylist will use to give you the cute stacked haircut you see on people like Victoria Beckham (before she chopped it all off). If you look at a style that is longer in front than in back and the layers seem deep and full, this is a cut using graduation.
To get this look, your stylist will cut your hair with the longest length in back first. After establishing the exterior line of the haircut, they will go in to the back and determine the length of the shortest layers in back. This becomes the stylists “stationary guide.” As they cut, they will draw the hair towards this line (over directing) so that when the hair falls back down, it will be longer in the front than in the back. This is just one type of graduation.
There is an old-school graduation that your stylist may or may not incorporate into your style. It’s not as common in younger people right now, but it can be really cute for certain styles. This graduation doesn’t have the same over direction as previously discussed, but the layers are cut the same length all across the back of the head. When the stylist establishes the layer line in the back, they will follow this line as they move from one side of the back of the head to the other. This is called a “moving guide.” It keeps the hair the same length and gives a more rounded and uniform shape.
The main theme with graduation is that the hair is cut at a low degree angle causing the “stacked” look. If you like the volume and movement of these graduated cuts, talk to your stylist about your face shape and lifestyle to see if the cut will work for you.
