The cool seasons are upon us and that means cooler, drier atmospheric conditions which can also lead to drier hair as well. For those that already deal with dry, brittle hair year round, you know too well that this season can really enhance your problem. For those that do not have dry hair worries during the warm months, the fall/winter season can sometimes catch you (and your hair) off guard. There are a number of things you can do to battle dry hair, but here are five great tips to get you started:
1. Choose your shampoo and conditioners wisely. Look for products with a low pH that contain humectants and proteins to help seal in moisture rather than strip it away.
2. Wash correctly but less often. The scalp produces an oil called sebum which is it’s own way of battling dry hair. When you wash, wash the hair and try not to dig into your scalp too much. Remember, it is your hair you want to moisturize! Additionally, try to wash every two to three days to allow your natural oils to help the dry hair. Use a dry shampoo if hair gets too heavy between washes.
3. Cut the heat! If your hair is feeling super dry and brittle, try to let it air dry after washing as often as possible. If you’re pressed for time and air drying is not an option, use a blow dryer on the lowest heat setting. Avoid straightening and curling irons as much as possible but if you must use, remember to protect with product.
4. Avoid chemical treatments. I know we all like to color or perm our hair, but remember that these treatments can really dry your hair out. If you must color or treat, try to do it now (before the air gets too extremely dry) and choose a color or treatment that will last a long time and you won’t have to worry with maintaining over the winter months.
5. “Eight glasses a day keeps the doctor away”. So it’s not hot outside anymore but it is still an absolute MUST to keep your body hydrated! Your hair is an extension of your body so if your body isn’t hydrated, all the moisturizing shampoos on the world aren’t going to help your dry tresses. Drink a minimum of eight glasses a day but shoot for ten.
